To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS L. ORDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Sprinkler- Nozzles; and I do hereby declare the follow-4 ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to -make and use the same.
My invention relates to a specifically new attachment for sprinkler-nozzles, which includes a substantially spoon-shaped deiiector adapted to be projected into the path of the issuing stream of water for the purpose of delecting and spraying said stream.
The object of the invention is to provide a cheap and simple device of the character indicated, which is adapted t0 be attached to nearly, if not all, hose-nozzles, and which, when the nozzle is held in the hand, will hang naturally out of the path of the stream, but which will be automatically held in position to break up the stream and deiiect it upward when the nozzle lies upon the ground and which will automatically assume that position when the nozzle is dropped from the hand to the ground.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of part-s hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan view, of my new attachment and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the parts by letters, A represents the deflector, which preferably is substantially spoon-shaped and has a reduced rear end or stem a. On this stem are two substantially vertical ears a', which are pivoted to the sides of a band B. This band is intended to t loosely upon some cylindrical part of the nozzle, which is indicated by dotted lines, so that said band may turn freely and easily upon the nozzle. The band may be made of spring metal having two ears l?, which may be connected by a bolt b' On the under side of the spoon-shaped deflector is a weighted leg C, which projects 5o also serves another purpose, to wit: it causes the defiector to remain below the nozzle, however much the nozzle may be turned, because the nozzle will turn freely in the band B. The weight of the deflector, due in part to the weight of this leg, holds the deflector, when the nozzle is held above the ground, out of the path of the stream. When the deflector occupies this position, the rear end of the stem engages with the nozzle, whereby the defiector and nozzle are held in substantially the relative positions shown by the dotted lines in Fig. l.
The attachment hereinbefore described While providing an efficient device for breaking the water into a spray also prevents the stream from digging a hole in the ground, if the nozzle be dropped carelessly or by accident, or if the water be turned on while the nozzle is lying upon the ground, because if the nozzle be dropped the deiector will remain below the nozzle, however much the nozzle may be turned by reason of the torsional action of the hose. The weighted leg C will strike the ground, the deector will assume the position shown by the full lines in Fig. l, and the water will be broken up into a spray and be deflected upward.
Having described my invention, I clai1n- In an attachment for hose-nozzles, the combination of a band, adapted to loosely embrace a hose-nozzle, with a deflector having a stem and two ears which are pivoted to said band, and a weighted leg on the under side of said deflector, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
