EARTH-AUG ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,388, dated December 15, 1896.
Application filed May 4,1896. Serial No. 590,195. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IIAMETT A. BROWN- LEE, of Oadeville, in the parish of Ouachita and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Earth- Augers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention pertains to earth-augers,and the object is to provide an anger of simple and improved construction, and one which may be manufactured at a comparatively small cost and which will be effective in operation.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved auger. Fig. 2isasectional plan View. Fig. 3 is an elevation. Fig. 4. is a detailed perspective View of one of the auger-bits detached from the stem. Fig. 5 is aview of the blank from which the bit is formed.
A designates the auger-stem, which is here shown formed of comparatively thin metal and twisted at its lower end to form the entering screw 13.
The auger is provided with two bits 0, having their longitudinal portions arranged obliquely to each other, whereby the lowermost portion D of each bit depends below the raised portion of the adjacent bit and is thus free to engage and cut the earth, the said depending portion D being bent downward slightly to form the cutting edge, as shown. At the extreme outer portion of each cutter O is an integral raised blade E to make the vertical cut of the hole being bored. Each bit is formed of a blank of the shape indicated in Fig. 5, wherein the outer portion is curved, while extending inward in line substantially parallel to the straight side of the blank is the slit or cut F, from which the securing-lip G is sprung upward vertically for securing to stem A, as shown. The slits F of the respective bits are arranged on opposite sides of the fiat stem A and secured thereto by the same rivet.
Thus a very simple and inexpensive eartl1- anger is provided which. is most effective in operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An earth-auger comprising a stem, bits or cutters, strips sprung upward from said cutters for attaching the same to the stem, and a securing means passing through each of said securing-strips and the stem for detachably securin g the said cutters to the stem, substantially as shown and described.
2. An earth-auger comprising a stern, bits or cutters arranged on said stem, each bit or cutter having a securing-strip for attachment to the stem, said securing-strip being formed by cutting the bit inward adjacent its straight side and bending upward the tongue or strip formed by the said out, and a means for securing the strips to the stem, substantially as described.
3. In an earth-auger, the combination of a stem, two bits arranged obliquely to each other and having opposite cutting edges, and
strips G sprung upward from the bits for se curing to thestem, substantially as described.
4.. An auger bit of semicircular contour having an upwardly-projecting knife, the said bit being cut radially adjacent its straight side and in line with the base of the said upwardlyprojecting knife to form a cutting edge which is a continuation of the said knife, and the strip Gformed by the said radial out adapted to be bent upward to form a securing portion for attachment to a stem, substantially as shown and described.
5. The auger-bit blank having a curved side, a lateral projection at one of the extremities of said curved side, the blank being formed with the slit extending inwardly from said lateral projection to form strip G, substantially as shown and described.
