- This invention relates to sprayers and sprinklers, such as are employed for sprinkling lawns, extinguishing fires, and for other and similar purposes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved and effective device of this class which may readily be attached to a water-supply pipe and which is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to produce the result for which it is intended.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 573,157, dated December 15, 1896. Application filed September 26, 1895. Serial No. 563,691. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD JOHN MEYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lock Haven, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprayers or Sprinklers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to sprayers and sprinklers, such as are employed for sprinkling lawns, extinguishing fires, and for other and similar purposes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved and effective device of this class which may readily be attached to a water-supply pipe and which is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to produce the result for which it is intended.
My invention consists of a spraying or sprinkling nozzle which is novel in construction and operation, and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of my improved nozzle sprayer and sprinkler; Fig. 2, a plan View thereof. Fig. 3 represents a modification of a detail thereof, and Fig. 4 another modification.
In the practice of my invention I provide a tubular attachment or nozzle A, which may be either straight or curved, and which is preferably screwthreaded at one end, as shown at B, whereby it may be readily attached to a water-pipe, and the other end thereof is provided with a head 0, which is preferably conical in form and in which is formed a conical cavity or recess D, the base of which is directed outward and the apex of which is in communication with the central bore or passage of the tube A by means of a port or opening E. Within the conical cavity or recess D, I place a conical sprayer F, the base of which is directed outward and the apex inward, and the apex thereof is also preferably rounded, as shown at G, and the base-corners thereof are also preferably cut away or rounded, as shown at II. This conical sprayer maybe made of brass or any other preferred metal or material, such as hard rubber, and if made of metal it should be hollow, as shown in Fig. 0.
I also preferably provide a wire or rod K, which maybe secured to the head 0 in any desired manner, and which is designed to hold the sprayer F in position when not in use and to prevent the accidental displacement or the loss thereof.
In operation the water under pressure passes through the tubular attachment A, through the port E, and out around the sprayer F, and the results produced will de pend largely upon the pressure of the water. The sprayer cannot be blown or forced from the cavity or recess in which it is placed by any reasonable amount of pressure,and,while it maybe subjected to a slight rotary motion, it will remain substantially in the position shown in Fig. 1 without the aid of any device for holding it therein.
It will be seen that the construction of my improved sprayer is exceedingly simple and that there is comparatively no danger of breaking the same or that it will easily get out of order.
My improved sprayer is also compact in form and occupies but little space, the size thereof depending largely upon the use to which it is to be put, and it will be found to be a perfect apparatus for extinguishing fires, as an entire room or apartment can be instantly sprayed or sprinkled thereby.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent A nozzle having a conical recess and within said nozzle a loosely-fitted conical sprayer having its outer or base edge cut away or rounded, and held in place by a transverse rod, the inner opening of the nozzle being fitted to a screw-threaded projection for attachment to a section of hose, all substantially as shown and described.
