PACKING-CASE.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRED S. MAORONALD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My inventionrelates to improvements in packing-boxes, and especially in that class of packing-boxes known as telescoping boxes.

It consists of two telescoping cases and in slotting the corners in the two cases with slots which are adapted to register with each other in certain positions.

It also consists in providing means forholding the two cases together by the insertion of a suitable binder in said slots.

In the drawings herewith accompanying and forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved packing-case, a portion of the box being broken away to show the inner case and binder when in position; and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same with the inner portion drawn out.

In said drawings, A represents the outer or larger section of the telescoping box; B, the inner or smaller portion,whicl1 is'of such size as will allow it to be easily inserted within the outer or larger portion. At the four corners of both the inner and outer case are slots C, which are adapted to register with each other when the two portions of the box are in position, as shown in Fig. 1. In order to prevent the inner portion of the case from sliding out when in use, and consequently emptying or destroying the contents, I insert a binder D through the slots in the outside case and draw the same tight. It will be seen that by drawing this binder tight it will set into the respective slots both in the outer and inner case, and will thereby prevent the inner case from being withdrawn. Near the bottom of the bottom case is a semicircular cut, so that when it is desired to remove the inner case a convenient place will be provided to grasp inner case.

In boxes of this description as previously made it has been found difficult to provide suitable means for keeping the smaller case within the larger case, and the only way that has proved successful is the fastening of the two portions together by twine or some adhesive, causing much trouble in both closing and opening the package.

By my improved method of providing the corners of the boxes with slots and inserting a binder of some sort therein the two parts are firmly and securely held together without the attendant trouble of tying the same.

To use my improved packing-case, the artiole is first placed in the inner or smaller case, and the outer or larger case brought down upon it until the slots register with the similar slots in the inner case. Then the binder is inserted in the slots, the binder extending through the outer slots into the inner slots, thereby holding the two portions securely together.

Having thus described my invention and its use, I claim 7.5 1. In a packing box the combination of an outside case and an inside case, of slots on the corners of the outer case of similar slots on the inner case and adapted to register with the slots on the outside case, substan- 8o tially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a packing-box in combination an outside case provided with slots at its corners, of an inner case capable of being inserted in said outer case and also provided with slots on its corners and adapted when said case is placed in position, to register with slots in the outer case and a binder adapted to be inserted through said slots in the outer and inner case substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
