Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
A. A. WILCOX, OF FAIR HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVED SHOE-NAILS.
Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent N0. 57,234, dated August 14, 1866,
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, A. A. WILGOX, of Fair Haven, in the county ot' N ew Haven and State ot Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Shoe-Nails; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in `connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specitication, and represent7 in Figure l, a side view ot' my improved nail, and in Fig. 2 an illustration of its use.
My invention relates to an improvement in metal nails, such as are used for securing heels to boots and shoes, or for heavy soles, the object being to better adapt the nailt'or-securin g the last or iinishing lift; and in order to enable others to make and use my' improved nails, I will proceed to describe the Same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
My improved nail may be formed in several ways. First, the nail A is cut'in the usual form and in the usual manner, then a collar, a, forced thereon to the position seen in Fig. l. A second manner ot' forming the nail is by swaging, to form the collar a from the saine metal as the nail. This last I believe to be the better plan. In Fig. 2 the use and object of the nail thus formed are shown.
In placing the last lift upon the heel, in most classes of work, it is desirable that the nail should not appear upon the outside. It is therefore customary to drive the nails partially into the heel; then, pointing the heads, the last lift is driven onto the nails. In doing this there is an uncertainty of securing the lift, for some of the nails are driven farther into the heel while hammering upon the last lift, so much so that they afford but little or no secu- .rity to the last lift; or it' not driven quite far enough into the heel they will show them# selves through the last lift, whereas by my improvement the. nails are driven until the collar bears iirmly upon the heel, so that they cannot be driven farther, and when thus driven the heads of the nails are prepared as other nails, and the lift in like manner hammered thereon with a certainty that each nail performs its duty in securing it thereto. The length of the nail should be in accordance with the part of the shoe or boot where it is to be used, whether it is for .the sole or the heel.
In some classes of work screws are used instead of nails, in which ease I form the screws with a collar in like manner as described for nails.
Having therefore thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shoe-nail provided with a collar, a, or its equivalent, substantially in the manner herein described, as a new article of manufacture.
A. A. WILOOX.
