Be it known that I, J UD SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sayre, in the county of Bradford an (1 State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Boxes for Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to water fire-boxes for steam-boilers, and more particularly to the class of locomotive-boilers where small space is afforded and rapid generation of steam required; and it consists in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in thespecification, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims. Its objects are to so construct-a fire-box as to obtain the maximum amount of heat with the minimum consumption of fuel; also, to provide a construction wherein the greatest possible area of heating-surface shall be in direct contact with the fire, and to provide means whereby the effect of the fire in contact with the heating-surface may be maintained at a nearly uniform rate when fresh fuel is being supplied or the fire shaken down and wedging or clogging of the fuel within the fire-box obviated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my fire-box and boiler. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on the line X X, Fig. 1.
Referring more specifically to the drawings by letter, A represents the fire-box, located in front of and below the boiler.
13 is the boiler, provided with flues Z1.
0 are the gratebars at the bottom of the fire-box, and they are arranged adjacent to the bottom of the passages or fines, and the individual bars are arranged between the side walls of the adjoining fines, and thus hold up the fire or fuel.
D are water-legs of the boiler, surrounding the fllQbOX.
E are water-passages extending longitudinally through the fire-box at its bottom, above the grate-bars, from front to rear and communicating with the front and rear waterlegs.
F represents the steam-chamber above the boiler and fire-box, and G the door of the firebox through which the fuel is introduced.
The lower portion of the fire-box is divided longitudinally by the water-fines E (which are preferably wedge shaped in cross section) into a number of fuel-compartments, as shown in Fig. 2, the lower portion of each compartment being wider than its upper, in consequence of the water-fines being arranged vertically upon their thinner or narrower edge, with their sides toward each other and the fire. By reason of this arrangement wedgin g or clogging of the fuel between the sides of the water-fines is prevented, as-the space for its accommodation constantly widens as it approaches the grate-bars, and a large area of heating-surface is afforded by each side of each water-flue between the fuel-surface and the grate, and the main body or hottest part of the fire is constantly in contact with such surface. As a consequence of the increased room and-diminished pressure at the bottom of each fuel-compartment, the fire is easily cleared without diminishing its heat or force while removing ashes and cinders-at the bot tom or supplying fresh fuel at the top.
By my construction the largest possible heating-surface is constantly in contact with the interior body of the fire, where it is subjected to the maximum intensity of the heat. Hence steam is necessarily generated in the shortest possible time, independent of the heat passing through the boiler-fines, and after the body of the fuel has become ignited the draft may be diminished without materially interfering with the steam-producing effect of the fire, and the consumption of fuel thereby minimized.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a firebox for a steam-boiler, the combination with the front and rear water-legs of the boiler, of water passages or flues'connecting both and dividing the fire-space above the grate into two or more compartments and a grate below said fines and adjacent thereto, substantially as and for the purpose de scribed.
2. In a fire-box for steam-boilers, one or more narrow water passages or fiues extending through and dividing the fuel-space int-0' separated compartments, and connecting the water-legs of the boiler through the fire and a grate below said lines and adjacent thereto, substantially as described.
