ARTHUR FRIEDHEIM, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
DEVICE FOR STAMPING OUT CARTONS, 84.6.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,999, dated November 24, 1896.
Application filed November 1, 1895. Serial No. 567,595. (No model.)
To coZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR FRIEDHEIM, manufacturer, a subject of the King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany, residing at Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Stamping Out Cartons, Cards, and the Like with Sloping Borders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a machine for manufacturing photographic mounts or like articles with beveled edges. The usualprocess of manufacturing such mounts is to first cut them with plain edges and afterward produce a bevel by a suitable machine.
The object of my invention is to produce the bevel at the same time the mounts or cards are cut from the sheet of material.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of the cutter-head stamp constructed according to my improvement. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modification. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan of the supporting-plate therefor, and Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate the manner of cutting cards.
I will now proceed to specifically describe my invention and then to point out its novel features in the claims.
As illustrated by Figs. 1 and 2, the stamping-machine is provided with a plunger or die, (not shown,) to which is attached a plate P, which moves vertically up and down and to which are pivoted or hinged four cutterholders A B C D, carrying the cutters E and F. The said cutters incline outwardly, as shown, and are so disposed that they will cut the edges of the card or mount according to the intended shape. Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate the arrangement of parts for cutting mounts of an oblong shape. It will be understood that when the plunger and the plate P move down and the lower edges of the cutters E and F come in contact with the material said cutters will penetrate into the material in an oblique direction, as indicated in Fig.
1, the pivotal joint of the holders allowing of such outward movement of the cutters.
When it is desired to produce cards with rounded corners, the cutters A and B are made somewhat shorter than the distance between the other set of cutters, O D, so that the machine will produce cuts C6 6 c d, such as shown in Fig. 5. The rounded corners e f g h, Fig. 6, are then produced by means of an especial cutter-head of the kind illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4.
The cutter-head shown in Figs. 3 and 4 has a plate P, with depending holders A B pivoted thereto to swing in approximately diagonal planes, the said holders carrying rounded cutters E F, arranged obliquely similarly to the cutters E F hereinbefore described, and a block G may be provided for holding said cutters steady until they engage the material, the holders being provided with screws J in engagement with the block G, the screws also permitting of adjusting the inclination of the cutters E and F.
I desire it to be understood that although I have shown my improvement applied to a stamping or punching machine the invention is not limited to such application, and I may provide the same features to produce the same result on a tool to be operated by hand.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a plate, a holder piv: otally suspended from the plate and a knife carried by the holder, the edge of the knife being disposed diagonally to the holder, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a plate, a plurality of holders pivotally suspended from the plate, and a knife carried by each holder, the knives being disposed diagonally to the holders and having their ends approximately contiguous to each other, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR FRIEDHEIM.
