UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'-.IOSEPH R. MOORE, OF DENVER, COLORADO, ASSIGN OR TO BLANCHE L. y KUYKENDALL,
OF SAME PLACE.
BICYCLE-BELL.
l SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,944, dated November 10, 1896.
Application tiled April 13, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH R. MOORE, a
citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoeand State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alarm Attachments for Velocipede-Pedals; and I do de-4 clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an alarm attachment for the pedals of bicycles and other velocipedes 5 and it consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a pedal provided with my alarm mech anism. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line ww, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inside view of the gong.
Similar reference-characters indicating corresponding parts in these views, let the numeral 5 designate the pedal, and 6 the pin thereof, having an extension 6, to which is attached a gong 14, having a central aperture through which the reduced extremity 6e of the extension 6a passes. lVithin the gong and surrounding the pedal-pin extension is a frame 7, composed of a small ring 7, a larger ring 7c, and two arms 7 d, connecting the rings. The small ring surrounds the extremity 6c and engages a shoulder formed on the extension 6a. The gong and the frame 7 are locked fast on the pedal-pin by a nut 8. To the ring 7 c are attached the spring-clappers 9, whose inner extremities are made fast to the ring, while their outer extremities are free and project outward toward the shell of the gong. The outer extremities of the clappers are provided with small knobs or enlargements 9a, located in suitable proximity to the inner surface of the gong.
Attached to the frame 5a of the pedal is a bracket 10, apertured to receive a push-but- Serial No. 587,377. (No model.)
ton 12, carrying an arm 12a, projecting into the gong and normally occupying a position outside of the clap per-knobs. The pushbu tton and this arm are supported in the normal position by a spring 13. When the bicycle or other velocipede is in motion, the gong, together with the frame 7 and its attachments, being fast on the pedal-pin, rotates therewith. Hence, if the rider desires to ring the bell, he presses the button 12 with his foot and depresses the arm 12asufiiciently to bring it into the path of theY spring-clappers 9, which are forced inward by the arm 12a, thus placing the clapper-springs under tension. Hence, as the clappers are released from engagement with the arm 12, the recoil of the dapper-springs throws the knobs outward against the gong, thus sounding the alarm.
It must be understood that I do not limit the invention to the details of construction herein set forth, as I am aware that many other forms may be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim is- 1. The combination with the pedal, of suitable alarm mechanism mounted on the pedalpin, and a movable device mounted on the pedal-frame and adapted to operate the alarm mechanism, 'as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with the pedal, of suitable alarm mechanism attached to the pedalpin, and comprising a gong and one or more spring-clappers, and a suitable device mounted on the pedal-frame, and adapted to be kmoved into the path of the clappers, as and for the purpose set forth. l
3. The combination with the pedal, of suitable alarm mechanism mounted on the pedal-y pin, and comprising a gong and one or more spring-clappers, and a push-button mounted on the pedal frame and carrying an arm adapted to be moved into the path of the clappers, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH R. MOORE.
