No. 569,747. Patented Oct. 20; 1896.

LEMON-JUICE EXTRACTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,747, dated October 20, 1896.
Application filed December 12, 1895. Serial No. 571,902. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS OURLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lemon-Juice Extractors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to devices for extracting the juice of lemons; and the object thereof is to provide an effective device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is comparatively inexpensive, while being Well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure l is a plan view of my improved device, and Fig. 2 a central section thereof on the line 2 2.
In the practice of my invention I provide a device for extracting the juice of lemons which comprises an annular base A, at the outer edge of which is formed an upwardlydirected rim or flange B, at one side of which is formed a discharge-spout G, and formed within the annular flange or rim B is a deep annular groove D. The bottom E, which is also circular in form, is provided at one side thereof, adjacent to the dischargespout C, with a shield 13, which is segmental in form and which is formed on or secured to the bottom E, and the depth of the annular groove I) is preferably about equal to the distance between the bottom E and the tip of the annular flange or rim B. Formed on the central portion of the bottom E is a cone G, which is provided with vertical ribs g, which extend from the base to the top thereof, by means of which vertical grooves or recesses H, which also extend from the base to the top of the cone, are also formed, and which are much deeper and larger at the base than at the top, the form of the ribs 9 being radial when viewed from the top, and said ribs, as will be seen, also converge to a point at the apex of the cone, and the edges thereof are preferably so formed as to cut or divide the pulp of a lemon.
It will be seen that the annular groove D entirely surrounds the bottom E and that a narrow ledge K surrounds the base of the cone, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. In practice a lemon is divided transversely of its longitudinal axis and at about the middle thereof, and the half of the lemon is pressed downwardly over the cone and at the same time given a rotary or revolving motion, pressure beingapplied thereto by the hand, and in this operation the pulp of the lemon is cut and divided by the ribs 9 and the juice is extracted therefrom and flows down between the ribs and into the annular groove D, where it is retained until discharged therefrom through the spout G. In this operation the shield F serves to prevent any of the divided pulp or the seed from passing out through the spout C, and the groove D is of such width that the pulp and the seed cannot enter thereinto, and the juice of the lemon is thus separated therefrom.
7 It will thus be seen that I provide a simple and effective device for extracting the juice of a lemon without extracting the oil or rind or other objectionable acids, and my improved device may be made of glass, porcelain, or other earthenware, or, if desired, it may be cast from metal, in which event care should be taken to select such metal or combinations thereof as will not corrode or be injuriously affected by acids.
The base A, or the outer surface thereof, is preferably provided with teeth or projections a, which aid in the handling of the device and also serve to give it an ornamental appearance.
Having fully described my invention, its construction and operation, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A device for extracting the juice of lemons, comprising a circular base, having a depending annular rim, with which is connected an upwardly-directed annular flange whereby a deep annular narrow groove is formed between said rim, and said flange, and said base being also provided centrally thereof with a cone, the sides of which are provided with vertical ribs, and said flange being provided my invention I have signed my name, in pres ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 5th day is THOMAS CURLEY.
