UNITED STATES PATENT Irricn.
JAMES A. PERRY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SOFA-BED.
S'EECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 569,664, dated October 20, 1896.
Application filed February 25, 1896. Serial No. 580,638. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may conce-W2,.-
Be it known that I, JAMES A. PERRY, a citizen oli' the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county ot Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined sofas and bedsteads.
rlhe invention will first be described in connect-ion with the accompanying drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device with swinging panels open and mattress removed; Fig. 2, a view of my device arranged as a sofa; Fig. 3, a detail view of panelfastening device; Fig. al, a detail view of catch device for swinging top pieces.
Referring to the drawings, A is a sofa-frame having legs a d', arms or ends d2, and a bottom a?. To the rear legs d are hinged swinging panels B, having inward-projecting arms h, secured to said panels about on a level with or slightly below the sofa-bottom a3. To the central rear portion of the sofa-f rame are pivoted two segment-levers C, having teeth c in mesh with each other, the arms c of said levers extending outward and being connected each by a link D to its respective arm l) by pivoted joints d d. 4
The swinging panels B are higher than the arms of the sofa and are adapted to swing outward from each other inline with the respective arms a2, to which they are attached, or to fold inward toward each other at right angles to said arms to form the back or a portion of the back of the sofa. lVhen swungin, they are locked to the sofa-frame by catches b', having rearward-extended thumb-pieces the said catches being formed integral with a rod b3, located in a hollow brace a4, which forms part of the frame. Said catches project rearward through openings in said hollow brace a* and are normally held upward by springs b3, also secured to the rod at.
On the sofa-frame is placed an upholstered mattress formed in two parts E E, hinged together so as to swing into planes at right angles to cach other or to lie both in the same plane. Then in the former conditiomthe part E will form the sofa-seat and the part E will form the sofa-back. lWhen both portions E E lie in the same plane, they will form amattress for the bed` This mattress is in its extended position only when the swinging panels B are outward, in which case the mattress is supported by angle irons a5, secured to the frame and to the panels, being in sections, as shown. To the upper edge of each sofa-arm a2 is hinged a swinging top piece F, these top pieces being constructed in such a manner that, when sw un g to an upright position, they will form, together with the sofa-arms d and the swinging panels B, symmetrical head and foot boards, respectively, when the said panels B are in their outward position. In order to hold the top pieces F in said uprightpositions, I provide a suitable catch or loc-k device f, which connects the top pieces to their respective swinging panels.
The manner of using my device is as follows: Then it is desired to use the same as a sofa, the top pieces F are swung outward and downward, the swinging panels are moved outward, and the back E' is allowed to fall into its horizontal position. The reversal ot the above operation will then convert the bed into a sofa. By using the segment-levers the two Swingin g panels move synchronously, and said panels may, therefore,be both opened or closed by operating one only.
The device described is particularly intended for construction from metal, such asy iron or brass, the top pieces F, arms d2, and panels B being ornamented in any suitable way, so as to preserve their symmetry as a whole, and at the same time, when the said top pieces are swung down, they form ornaments to the sofa-arms a?.
l. The combination with a sofa-frame having arms, of a pair of swinging panels hinged at the rear ot the arms and arranged to swing in line with said arms or inward at right angles thereto to form the sofa-back, said panels being higher than the arms, a top piece hinged to each arm and arranged to swing into an upright position, means for securing the said top pieces in their upright positions, and a mattress formed of two portions hinged together and arranged to lie in the same plane ICO each panel being provided with an inwardlyextending arm,'of a pair of segment-levers pivoted to the sofa-frame and provided with toothed segments in mesh With each other7 and links connecting the outer ends of the segment-levers to the respective inward-projecting arms, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES A. PERRY. Vitnesses:
W. W. ADMIRE, CURTIS B. STONE.
