To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clarke and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Appliances for Bath-Tubs, Washstands, Sinks, and the Like; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to sanitary appliances for bath-tubs,washstands, sinks, and the like, and has for its object the provision of a simply-constructed device which will operate as a back-seal and house-trap, as a stopper for the basin, as an automatic discharge for the overflow, and as a force-pump in case of stoppage.
My invention consists in a cylinder forming a continuation of the waste-pipe and having a lateral pipe for connection with the basin. \Vithin this cylinder is a valve which, when depressed, acts as a stopper for the basin, and this valve is connected to a float which, when raised by an excess of water in the basin, in turn raises said valve, and the overflow is thus carried off.
My invention also consists in a trap which is both a back-seal and house-trap, and also in a certain adjustment of the parts whereby the device is converted into a force-pump for clearing out pipes in case of stoppage.
The construction, relative arrangement, and operation of the several parts of my improved device will now be fully and clearly described, and attention is called in connectionwith such description to the accompanying (in wings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my improved device, taken on line so xof Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A denotes a cylindrical casing, which forms a con tinuation of the waste-pipe and a closure for same to prevent the escape of gas. .The upper end of the casing is exteriorly screwthreaded and is passed through an opening in the slab, and a is an annular flange which, with a flanged nut a, adapted for engagement with the upper end of the casing, forms a con venient means for making a firm connection with the slab. About midway of its length the cylinder is reduced slightly, whereby is formed an annular shoulder or seat at, the purpose of which will presently appear. Above this shoulder is a lateral branch pipe I), which is connected by means of acoupling b with the elbow c, the latter being flanged at c and connected in any suitable manner to the basin, bowl, or the like.
d is a removable strainer to prevent the entrance into the waste-pipe of any substance which would tend to clog the same.
6 is a valve of the reciprocatingtype conneoted to a rod 6', which latter is secured at its upper end to a float f cylindrical in form and movable in the upper portion of the cylinder. A stop f on this float by engagement with the upper end of the nut a maintains the raised position of the valve c, and a is a groove in the inner side of the nut which is adapted to receive the stop and permit the free movement of the float when the same is turned and the stop and groove register. In the lower part of the casing is a tube g, having an annular flange g,which normally rests on the shoulder a and above this flange is a seat g for the valve c. This tube forms the passage for the waste water, the cylinder being otherwise closed by the flange g, and is exteriorly screwthreaded to receive a washer 71', the purpose of which will presently appear.
The lower end of the valve-rod is screwthreaded to receive a cup 'i, which is of a diameter sufficient to receive the lower end of the tube g, and in the event of a back pressure this cup, with the tube, forms a back-seal and close the passage to the basin. This cup also forms a house-trap, as by its arrangementall of the waste water must pass through the tube and into the cup before it can escape to the wastepipe, and the sediment, sand, andother substance is deposited in thecup and can be removed from time to time by unscrewing the cup from the valverod. a" is a gasket in said cup.
In the operation of the device the valve is lowered to its seat by turning the float until the stop thereon and the groove in the nut register, and the outlet from the basin is thus stopped as effectively as can be done by the use of the ordinary plug or stopper. In the event, however, of the water rising above the required level, the float is raised by the water and the valve opened to allow the excess of water to run off, so that at no time can the basin or sink overflow, especially as the valve is normally in a raised position. In the event of a stoppage of the waste-pipe the device can be converted into a force-pump by screwing the cup up on the rod against the lower end of the tube, and the latter being movable and provided with the washer 71 the operation is the same as that of the ordinary plumbers force-pump, the float being the handle and the valve-rod the pump-rod.
It will be understood that the water in the basin after the same has been used is allowed to flow off by simply raising the float, which in turn opens the valve, so that to use the basin, sink, tub, or other appliance one has merely to unlock the float and lower it to stop the flow of water, and to raise it to permit the water to flow off, and in the event of failure to do the latter the float is automatically operated to preserve the level of water, and there is no danger of an overflow. The upper end of the float is made to conform to the shape of a handle for convenience in manipulating the same.
By my invention, and with a construction which is of the simplest character, I am enabled to combine all of the operations essential to appliances for bath-tubs, sinks, basins, and the like into one device. The operations and adjustments necessary do not require skill, inasmuch as all of the movable parts can be drawn out bodily from the easing without the necessity of removing the latter.
The device can be cheaply and attractively made, and its simplicity will render it durable and keep it in order.
I claim as my invention 1. In sanitary appliances of the class described the combination of the waste-pipe, a pipe leading from the basin to said waste-pipe, a casing extending upward from the wastepipe, a float movable in said casing, a valvestem depending from the float and carrying a Valve, a tube within the casing, the upper end of which forms a seat for the valve, and through which tube the stem passes, and a cup on the lower end of the stem, substantially as described.
2. In sanitary appliances of the class described, the combination with the waste-pipe and a pipe leading therefrom to the basin, of a tube in said waste-pipe, a valve and a stem for the valve passed through the tube, and a cup 011 the stem below said tube, substantially as described.
3. In sanitary appliances of the class described, the combination of the valve, valverod and float of the tube having a seat for the valve, and having the washer, and the cup adapted to be screwed upon the lower end of the rod, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. 1

In sanitary appliances of the class described, the combination of the casing having a screw-threaded upper end, and a reduced portion forming a shoulder, a nut for said upper end having a groove, the tube having the flange for the shoulder and a washer, the reciprocating valve adapted to seat itself on the upper end of the tube, the valve-rod screwthreaded at its lower end, the float at the upper end of the rod having the stop. thereon,
and projecting beyond the nut, and the cup adapted for connection to the lower end of the rod, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
