Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT B. SHERMAN, OF NATIOK, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN MODE OF LUBRICATING JOURNAL-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 56,624, dated July 24, 1866.
To rtl/whom it 'may concern:
Beit known that I, ALBERT It. SHERMAN, of Natick, Kent county, State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Self-Lubrieatin g J ournal-BoX 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification., in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal central section ofthis invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar le tters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of caps which catch over the ends of the journal-box and revolve with the shaft, in combination with a brush or scraper, in such a manner that the oil or lubricating material which is forced out at the ends of the journal-box and which collects in the caps is returned to the iournal, and said lubricating material is thus used over and over again until it is spent.
A represents a journalbox, made ot' iron or any other suitable material, and bored out to receive the journal B ofthe shaft O. On this shaft are tit-ted two caps, D, which are spun or otherwise produced of sheet metal or any other suitable material, and which are so formed that they can be made to slide back and forth on the shaft, and that they can be brought in such a position that they embrace or cover the ends of the journal-box, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings. Said box is provided with an oil-channel, a, extending down to the journal B, and oil or lubricating material is supplied to this channel through the cup b, which maybe cast solid with the journal-box, or which may be otherwise attached to the same.
From the ends of the journal-box rise two brushes or Scrapers, c, which extend up to the inner peripheries of the caps D, and the lubricating material scraped oft' by said brushes or Scrapers returns to the journal through the lateral channels d.
The operation is as follows: The lubricating material introduced through the cup b and channel a spreads over the journal B, and it runs out at the ends of the journal-box and collects in the caps D. By the revolving motion of these caps the lubricating material is carried round and round, and as it meets the brushes or Scrapers c it returns to the journal through the channels d.
By these means all waste ot' lubricatin g material is avoided, and said material is returned to the journal over and over again until it is completely spent.
For the purpose of cleaning, the caps I) are moved back on the shaft, so that veasy access can be had to their interior, and by the caps themselves the shaft is kept clean, the lubricating material being prevented from following the shaft and soiling the same, as it does with journaLboXes of the ordinary construction.
What I claim asv new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The caps D and scrapers c, in combination with the shaft O and boX A, constructed and operating` substantially as and for thc purpose described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 2d day of May, 1866.
ALBERT R. SHERMAN.
