Be it known that I, ANNIE LoynniNe PEROT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, inthe county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Devices for Holding Knitting Silks and Worsteds; and I dohereby declare that the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a A

This invention relates to devices for holding knitting silks and worsteds duringthe operation ofworking and knitting byhand,

and it has special relationto that type of devices of this class which embody a suspending-hook carrying a frame upon which is adapted to be mounted the knitting silks or worsteds. A

My present invention embodies an improved form and construction and arrange ment of this type of devices, as presented in my pending application, Serial No. 563,543, filed September 24, 1895.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a device embodying my invention, showing the same in position for use, the spool of knitting-silk being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a detail transverse sectional view, the ball of worsted being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device, illustratin g a modification.

Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the frame of the device, which may be constructed in a single piece of flat spring metal, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and embodies a transverse top plate a and depending side plates at and a respectively. At the lower end of the depending side piece or plate a is pivot-ally hinged or mounted an arm or rod B, adapted to extend transversely across the frame A at its bottom and engage the opposite depending side piece or plate a with its free end I). The pivotal or hinge connection between the arm or bar Band the depending side piece a is preferably formed by an eye or loop b, formed at the end of the bar and of the rod, for which purpose the end I) is constructed in the shape of a hook or knob, as shown, and is preferably blunt to obviate engagement with the dress of the operator.

' To enable the engagement and disengagement of the end of the pivotedor hinged bar with the side piece a, the latter is adapted tospring outwardly, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. I do not restrict myself specifically to the form of pivotal or hinge connection of the bar B with the side piece a nor to the means for engaging the bar with the side piece a, as herein shown, it being obvious that these connections may be formed or constructed in any suitable or adapted manner. In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a modification in which the frame A, instead of being formed in a single piece of spring metal, has the side pieces a and a formed separately from the transverse top plate a. In this construction the depending side pieces are preferably formed of wire, having a pivotal or hinge connection with the respective ends of the transverse top plate a, this connection being preferably formed by means of eyes or loops m, provided at the top ends of the side pieces and engaging an eye or opening m, formed in the ends of the transverse top plate a. The side pieces thus have a pivotal or hinge connection with the transverse top-plate and hang or depend loosely therefrom. In this construction the rod or bar B has a cone sponding pivotal or hinge connection with the lower end of the side piece a preferably formed by the engagement of the eye or loop I) with the eye or loop a at the lower end of the side piece a and the outer free end I) is adapted to engage the hook or, formed at the lower end of the side piece a, said end Z) being in the shape of a knob, as above specified. Ido not restrict myself specifically to the form of pivotal or hinge connections between the side pieces and transverse top plate, nor the connections between the bar B and the side pieces, as shown in said modification, as any suitable or adapted connections of this character may be employed.

The spool of knitting-silk or ball of worsted is adapted to be carried upon the hinged bottom bar B, as shown.

The frame A is adapted to be suspended from a hook C, such as shown in my abovementioned pending application for patent, connected with the transverse top plate a, the hook being designed to be engaged in a womans dress. The hook O is connected with the transverse top plate a by a swiveled joint, as shown at c, to allow free play of the suspended frame. The connection of the hook proper with the plate is preferably effected by means of a short bar or pin D, having its lower end swiveled to the plate a, as shown at c, and projecting upwardly from the plate. The lower end. of the hook is loosely connected to the end of the swiveled hook D preferably by engaging loops or eyes 0 and d on the respective parts.

The operation and advantages of my inven tion will be readily understood. It is adapted for simple and convenient use to effectively hold knitting silks or worsteds during the operation of knitting, and will retain the same in proper position for use and obviate any liability of tangling or displacement.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An improved device forholding knitting silks and worsteds, comprising the suspending-hook adapted to be attached to the dress of the operator, the transverse top piece comprised in the frame and extending across the device, the bar or pin having its top end pivotally connected with the suspending-hook and its lower end swiveled to said transverse top plate, the depending side pieces of the frame extending downwardly from the ends of said transverse top piece, and the bottom rod or bar having one end connected by a hinge-joint with the lower end of one of the depending side pieces and its free end detachably connected with the opposite side piece, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. An improved device for holding knitting silks and worsteds, comprising the suspending-hook adapted to be attached to the dress of the operator, the frame constructed in a single piece of a spring-plate and embodying the transverse top plate extending across the device and the side plates depending from the ends of said transverse top plate and adapted to spring outwardly, the bar or pin having its top end pivotally connected with the suspending-hook and its lower end swiveled centrally to the top cross-plate of the frame, and the bottom rod or bar having one end connected by ahinge-joint with the lower end of one of the depending spring side plates and its free end detachably connected with the other side plate by reason of the outward spring of the latter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
