SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,143, dated August 4, 1896. Application filed September 21,1895. fierial No. 563,266. We model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Pn'rnnson, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of sleds and hand or push sleighs, the construction being such that the parts of the sled may be detached and folded into small compass when not in use, for convenience in storing or transportation, and quickly and easily set up for use.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in. which like figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my new and improved sled or sleigh. Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a central sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a detailed plan of the rear beam, and Fig. 5 is a detailed plan View of one of the rear standards.
In the drawings, 2 2 represent the runners. These are united at their forward ends by a rung 3, to which a cord, strap, or tongue may be attached for drawing the sled, if desired. This bar 3 is formed with small pins or projections 4.- at, which pass through holes in the runners and project out past the outer surfaces of the runners, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, to receive and hold the front ends of the side staves 5 5 of the seat 6. These side staves 5 5 are by preference curved, as shown in Fig. 2, and made of spring material, wood or metal, and are united by a series of slats 7, which are sectional, or made in two parts, and united in the center of the seat by hinges S, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that when the seat is detached from the sled it may be folded upon itself to occupy small space. The rear ends of the said staves 5 5 are supported by a beam 9, which is held above the runners by the standards 10, which are connected to the runners by mortises and tenons 12 and crossed detachable braces 13 13, which engage with eyebolts 14 15, attached, respectively, to the runners and the standards, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The ends of the beam 9 are provided with T-clips 16 16 to enter T sockets 17 or 18 in standards 10. I prefer to provide the said standards with two T-soclzets 17 18, one below the other, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the seat 6 may be raised or lowered, as desired, by raising or lowering the beam 9. The upper ends of the standards 10 are united by a cross-piece 19, which is constructed with apertures 20 20 to slip over reduced portions 21 21 of the standards 10, and this cross-piece 19 may be formed with handles 22 22, by which the sled may be conveniently pushed or propelled from behind.
The seat 6, when opened out and placed in position on the sled, is stiffened by the braces 23, 24 24c, and 25 25, which are hinged at one end to eyebolts 26 and formed at the opposite end with hooks 27 to enter opposite eye bolts, so that when in place they efiectually brace the sled and yet permit the braces to be readily detached at the hooked ends for detaching the seat and permitting the sled to be folded.
In case the sled is made short for coasting the runners will be made appropriately short and the standards 10 will be set forward on the runners, and the braces 13 13 will be connected to the eyebolts 28, 29, or 30, as the case may be, and the extensions 21 and cross-piece 19 will be omitted.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A sled comprising the runners, at rung at their front ends, standards supported by the runners and a beam for uniting said standards, in combination with a detachable seat attached to the said rung and beam and formed of curved side staves united by hinged slats; substantially as described.
