Description
(No Model.) V E. WILMONT. TOY.
No ;-563,533. Patented July 7, 1.896.
W TNESS.- NEN TO!? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDYVIN WVILMONT, OF LAONA, NEWV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO W'ILLIS D. LEET, OF SAME PLACE.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,533, dated July 7, 1896.
Application filed April 10, 1896. Serial No. 586,974. (No model.)
To all whom it may sondern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN "WILMONT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Laona, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of IO reference indicate correspondng parts.
This invention relates to toys, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which resembles in form an ordinary toy pistol, but which is designed to be 5 used as an automatic whistle.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional View of my improved device; Fig. 2, an end View thereof, and Fig.
3 a section on the line 3 3.
In the practice of my invention I provide a handle A, having a shank a, at the outer end of which is an upwardly-directed arm a,
'provided with an annular head a in which is mounted a tube B, in the outer end of which is placed a whistle b, having a central bore 17 and a shank ?9 which extends a predetermined distance into said tube, and at the inner end of which is an annular shoulder or head 17 which is designed to fit the inner walls of said tube.
The central bore b of the tube B decreases in size from the inner end thereof outwardly,
3 5 and the inner end of said tube B is provided with a circular head D, to the perimeter of which is secured a fiexible and e'lastic disk d of rubber or similar material.
Secured centrally of the disk dis a conical 4o projection G, through which passes a rod g, and the outer end of which is provided With a downwardly-directed hook or projection g, and the inner end of which passes through the disk d and is provided with a plate H,
'n place by nuts or burs h.
p ormed at the outer end of the shank a of thehandle A and adjacent to said handle is -an upwaly-directed arm M, in the top of which 5o are a vertical slide or opening m and two upwardly-directed shoulders or projections m 4\wl;ich is mounted thereon and which is held between which is pivoted a trigger O, having an inwardly-directed projection 0 and the downwardly-directed hook or projection 9 on the rod G is adapted to engage with a notch or recess P, formed in the upper sides of the shoulders or projections m and to be disconnected therefrom by the'projection or arm 0 of the trigger O.
The fleXible and elastic disk d may be secured to the circular head D of the tube Bin any desired manner, and the operation may be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
The rod Gand the tube B are held in proper position by a transverse pin or bolt R, which passes through the said tube, and in operation the rod G is drawn outwardly and engages with the notch or recess P in the upper side of the shoulders or projections m and the flexible and elastic disk d yielding and stretching to permit of this operation, this position of the parts being clearly shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 1, and when the parts are in this position it is only necessary to press inwardly on the trigger O, which will disengage the rod g from the notches or recess P, and the elastic disk d will fly back into position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and the air will be forced through the whistle d. This whistle may be of any desired form or construction and may be constructed so as to produce any desired sound, and it will thus be seen that l provide a novel device of this class, and one which is well adapted to amuse and entertain children, and which is'also comparatively inexpensive.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A toy whistle, comprising a handle, provided with a shank, at the outer end ofwhich is an upwardly-directed arm, a tube mounted in said arm and provided with a whistle at its outer end, and with a circular head at its inner end, a fiexible and elastic' disk secured to said circular head and provided with a rod which passes through the center thereof and which is adapted to be drawn outwardly and connected with an upwardly-directed arm secured to and formed on the upper portion of the handle, and means for reieasng said rod from said arm, substantially as shown and described.
2. A toy whistle comprising a handle, provided with a shank, at the onter end of which is an upwardly-directed arni, a tube monnted in said arm and provided with a whistle at its outer end, and with a circular head at its inner end, a flexible and elastic disk Secured to said circular head and provided with a rod which passes through the center thereof'and which is adapted to be drawn outwardly and connected With an upwardly-directed arm secured to and formed on the upper portion of the handle, and means for releasing said rod from said arn, consisting of a trigger which is pivotally connected with said arm, substantially as shown and described.
3. A toy device, comprising a whist1e,which consists of a handle, a shank connected therewith and npwardly-drected arms at each end thereof, one of said arms being provided with a tube which is mounted thei-ein and in the onter end of which is placed a whistle, said tube being p'ovdedat its inner end with a circnlar head, to which is Secured a flexible and elastic disk, the said disk being provided centrally of its outer side with an attachment through which passes a rod, the outer end of which is provided with a hook or projection which is adapted to engage with a notch or recess at the upper end of the arm at the inner end of the shaft of the handle, and a triggenpivotally connected with said arm and adapted to disengage said rod from said notch or recess, suhstantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this Gth day of April, 1896.
