UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SPIEGLE, J R., OF PASSAIC, NEWV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO DONALDSON BROTHERS, NEW YORK, Y.
TOYI
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,674, dated June 23, 1896.
Application filed April 4,1896. serial No. 586,165. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES SPIEGLE, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing in Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved toy, which is preferably made from paper or other suitable material, and adapted either to be cut out by children and placed into shape so as to form a flower-pot, bouquet, &c., or which can be cut out into shape by means of dies, so as to be ready to be made up into a flowerpot or bouquet; and the invention consists of a toy which comprises a conical body in the nature of a pot or vessel made of a blank provided with looking devices at the edges, a horizontal portion or web provided with looking devices connecting with the conical body, said horizontal portion or web being provided with angular slits, and a number of objects in the form of flowers provided at their lower ends with lugs for engaging the angular slits in the horizontal portion of the body, so as to represent, when supported thereon, apot with flowers, vase with flowers, or other object, as willbe fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved toy arranged in the nature of a flower-pot. Fig. 2 is a blank of the body, showing the means for locking the ends of the same together. Fig. 3 is a top view of the horizontal portion or web of the body; and Figs. 4 and 5 are front views of objects made in the form of flowers, provided with means for interlocking with the horizontal portion or web of the body.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a conical body formed in the nature of a pot, vase, or other vessel, which body is made of a single segmental blank A, that is provided with overlapping ends a a, and with means for locking the ends together, which means consist of a long slit 0, for the passage of one end a, a lug of, and a shorter slit (4 adjacent to and parallel with the long slit a The upper part of the conical body A is provided at diiferent points of its circumference with parallel slits a a, through which the radial lugs b of a horizontal portion or web B are passed, said lugs being first passed outwardly through the upper slits a and then returned inwardly through the lower slits a, as shown in Fig. 1. The horizontal circular portion or web 13 is provided with a number of slits d, preferably of angular shape, into which are inserted objects 0, which are preferably in the nature of flowers, leaves, &c., as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, each of which being provided at its lower end or base with a lug e, that passes through the longer portion of the slit (1, and an extension 6', provided with a shorter lug or portion 6 which latter is inserted through the angular portion of the slit (1, so that thereby a double support and stay of the objects 0 with the horizontal portion or web 13 is produced.
By grouping the objects 0 in proper rela tive position toward each other on the surface of the horizontal portion or web B the appear- 7 5 ance of a flower-pot, vase with flowers, &c., is obtained, as shown in Fig. 1. The objects 0 may be made up in other shapes, as I do not desire to confine myself specially to the representation of flowers. The body may be made likewise in any other fanciful shape, as desired, and be printed with the web B and objects 0 in suitable colors on paper to be out out by the children or cut out by dies, so as to be put together, it forming in either case an attractive and artistic toy for children.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A toy, composed of a tubular body, a 0 horizontal portion or web, means for connecting said horizontal portion or web with the tubular body, said horizontal portion or web being provided with slits, and objects, pro vided with lugs at the lower ends, and adapted to be supported on the horizontal portion or web, substantially as set forth.
2. A toy, composed of a tubular supportingbody provided with parallel slits in its circumference, a horizontal portion or web pro- Ioo vided'with radial-lugs" interlocking-with the my'inventionlhav'e signedmy'name ill-presparallel slits-0f the body, and with angular -ence"0ftwo subscribing;- witnesses; slits, and objects provided with lugs at their bases for interlocking with the slits of the I CHAS. SPIEGLE, JR. 5 horizontal portion or Web, substantially as set Vitnesses:
