Description

H. H. POTTER.
Burglar Aarm.
.Patented July 10, 1866.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEG H. H. POTTER, OF OARTHAGE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED BURGLAR-ALARM.
Speciiieation forming` part of Letters Patent No. 56,262, dated July 10, 1866.
To all whom It may concern:
Be it known that I, H. H. POTTER, of Oarthage, in the county ol' Jelerson and Stateof New York, have invented a new and Improved Burglar-Alarm g and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the artto make and use the Sallie, reference bein g had to the accom pan .vi n g draw ings, forming part ot' this specification.
r)Ehe present invention consists in a novel and sim ple arrangement of mechanical devices for opera-ting,- the hammer ot' the bell used in the burglar-alarm, as will be apparentfrom the following detail description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings,in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of the operating,` devices; and Fig. 2, an elevation ot' the same, showing the bell in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A in the drawings represents the bed-plate of the alarm, having a center-post or standard, B, upon the upper end of which the bell O is screwed orotherwise properly secured; l), the bell-hammer, hung and turning 'by its stem E upon a fulcrum-pin, F, of the bed-plate, the tail end of which hanmIer-stem has a spiral spring, G, secured to it, that at its other end is secured to a. fixed point or pin, H, o the bed-plate A.
I is a bent lever hung' upon a fulerum, J, of the bed-plate, to the tail end of which lever a spiral spring, K, is connected, that at the other end is hung,` to the pin H, hereinbefore referred to. The bent lever I projects beyond the bell O, and by its curved arm L, which is provided with a series of teeth, (l, n, that, as the lever is swung' toward the center-post B ol' the plate A, abut in turn against the arm b ofthe hammer-stem E, s\\'ing ;in;l it upon its lnlcrnm, and thus drawing` the hammer back or trippingl its stem, so that by the action of the spiral spring Gr it is thrown with great force against the bell, sounding,- the same, the number ot' sounds thus produced upon the bell being,l more or less, according to the length ot' movement given to the lever I and the number of its teeth or notches.
The plate A has a iixed upright, M, that is slotted in the direction of its length, b v means of which the ala-rm can be set upon a fixed screw-head or other suitable pin in proper position for the lever I to be operated upon by the opening,` of a door or window, duc., and to thus cause the alarm-bell to be sounded or to be removed from such pin.
I claim as new and desire 4to secure by Letters Patentl. The bell (l, or its equivalent, lever I, hav ing toothed arm L, hell-hammerI), and springs Gand K, when arranged and combined to gether substantiallT as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The slotted upright M of the bed-plate A, as and for the purpose described.
