SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,530, dated June 23, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SARAHP. HANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heat-Deflectors; and I do declare the following to be a f ull,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to detachable heatdeflectors for hot-air registers and is adapted to be secured, detachably, over andlupon the register-opening for the purpose of throwing or spreading the heat upon or near the floor of the room in which it isused, and also for directing the heat toward any particular point of the room in which the register is located.

This invention consists, essentially, in a suitable hood or casing having an opening or openings therein for the passage and delivery of the heated air, and means for detachably securing the said hood or casing over and upon the register-opening.

The invention further consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts of the device hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my invention as applied to a register in a floor, showing all the sides thereof open and means for holding the said device in place. Fig. 2 is a view of my invention, showing but two sides thereof open for the passage of heat. Fig. 3 is a modified form which can be applied to either a register-opening in the floor or to a vertical register-opening in the side of the wall and having but one side thereof open for the passage of heat.

0 is a hood or casing consisting of the top or deflecting plate 0 and the legs, sides, or supports 0 lnl ig. 1 I have shown the deflecting-plate supported upon legs located at each corner and having their lower ends connected by stays or braces 0 as shown. Instead of having the legs or supports (3 on the corners of the plate they may extend along either side, closing up the space between the corners and leaving openings only in the ends between the corners, or they can extend nearly around the plate, leaving a small opening for the passage of heat in one end only, as the circumstances of the case may require.

The deflector-plate C may be of any form desired, for it is evident that in different 10- cations the form thereof will of necessity be different, such, for instance, as is shown in Fig. 3.

The shape of the hood or casing is not material, as it is apparent that it can be rounded, (circular, semispherical,dome-shaped, scoopshaped, square, or oblong, or, in fact, any shape that may be desired.

The casing or hood is secured over the register-opening by hinged or movable hooks c, suitably secured to the floor or wall, turned over and upon the stays or braces 0 as shown, or when the sides or ends are closed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the hooks c are turned into the holes 0, as shown.

The manner of adjusting and detaching this device is apparent without further description.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination with a hot-air register, of a hood or casing 0, consisting of a deflectorplate 0, legs or supports C stays or braces 0 connecting and bracing the lower ends of said legs or supports 0 and suitable openings between said legs or supports, and hooks c secured to the floor so that the hooked end thereof can be turned over and upon the stays or braces O to securely hold the said hood in position over the register, and adapted to be turned away from and out of engagement with the'said stays or braces C for the purpose of detaching the said hood from the register, as and for the purpose described.
