STAPLE-PULLER AND WIRE-TIGHTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,463, dated June 2, 1896. Application tiled July 10, 1895. Serial No. 555,566. (No model.)
To a/ZZ 1071/0712/ t may concern:
Be itknown that I, THEOPHILUs PARKER XVOOTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bryan, in the county of Brazos and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Staple-Puller and Vire-Tightener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in devices for drawing staples and tightening fence-wires, and has for its object to provide a simple, reliable, and efficient staple-puller and wire tightener or twister combined.
One of the objects of the invention is to render the device easily interchangeable from a staple-puller to a wire twister or tightener.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the subjoined description.
The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and iinally embodied in the claims. l
In the accompanying drawings', Figure 1 is a perspective view of an improved hand device constructed in accordance with the prescnt invention, the same being adapted as a staple-puller. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same adapted as a wire tightener or twister. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the staple-puller attachment. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the twister or tightener attachment.
Similarnumerals of reference designate corresponding` parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, l designates the handle or stop of the device, which is formed adjacent to its outer end with an enlargement 2, in which is formed a rectangular aperture 3. Outside of and beyond such enlargement is an integrally-formed curved extension in the .form of a substantially semicircularhook or jaw 4f, the extremity of which is flattened for a purpose that will hereinafter appear. The inner end of the handle l is provided wi th an integrally-formed loop or eye 5, which is adapted to receive a bar or lever for turning the device when used as a wire tightencr or twister.
G designates the staple-puller attachment, which is formed at its inner end with a rectangular shank or bearing which enters and rests within the rectangular 'opening 3 in the between the same and the hook or jaw i and is formed at its outer end with an inwardlyprojecting pointed and tapering iinger or bill l0, which is adapted when in closed position to lie just outside of or beyond the extremity of the hook or jaw 4.
`1l indicates a handle-lever, which is carried by the member G and is pivotally connected therewith by means of a link 12. The outer end of the handle-leverll is extended beyond its pivotal connection with the link l2, where it receives one end of a pivotal link 13, which carries at its outer end a laterallyprojecting pin or stud la, which enters and has its bearing in a perforation in the jaw or hook 4. By means of this construction it will be seen that by rocking the handle-lever 1l the extremities of the hook 4 and member G may be vibrated toward or away from each other, as desired, and the extent to which the device may be opened may be regulated by adjusting the win ged nut 9 inward or outward upon the threaded shank 8 of the staple-puller member.
In operation the iiattened extremity of the hook or jaw 4 is placed against the staple to be drawn and the inner ends of the handles l and l1 drawn toward each other, which will cause the finger or bill 10 to enter the staple, whereupon by vibrating the handles in the proper direction the rounded outer end of the member 6 will act as a fulcrum, thus adapting the finger or bill l0 to operate as a pry and to extract the staple.
By removing the winged nut and washer the staple-puller attachment, together with its handle-lever, may be removed from the handle or stock 1 and the wire twister or tightener attachment applied in the place thereof. This latter attachment is provided similarly to the member G with a rectangular shank or extension 15, which enters the rec- IOO tangular opening 3 of the handle l, and also with a threaded shank to which may be applied the same winged nut and washer used for securing the member G in place. The wiretightener attachment has formed integrally therewith a curved or substantially semicircular jaw 16 of approximatelythe same shape as the jaw 4, and also provided with a iiattened extremity which is adapted to abut against the corresponding extremity of the jaw 4L, when the same are drawn together by the Winged nut.
In operation the wire to be tightened is clamped between the outer ends or extremities of the jaws 4 and 16 with the aid of the winged nut and a bar or lever inserted through the loop or eye 5 at the inner end of the handle l. The device is now rotated until the slack has been taken up in the wire by forming as many twists therein as may be necessary, after which the wire may be again secured by a staple.
The device above described will thus be seen to comprise both a staple-puller and a wire tighten er or twistcrgand the change from one article to the other may be readily affected in a short space of time. The device is very simple in construction, strong and durable in practice, an d will be found very convenient and efficient in operation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
I-laving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l. A device of the character described, comprisin g a suitable handle or stock having an opening and provided with an integral hook or jaw, a movable jaw having a shank arranged Within the opening in the handle or stock and having also a threaded shank adapted to receive an adjusting-nut, a pointed iinger or bill formed integrally with the movable jaw and disposed beyond the extremity of the jaw on the handle or stock, and a handle-lever for opening and closing the points or extremities of said jaws, substantially in the manner and for the purpose speciiied.
2. In a staple-extractor, the combination with a handle and a ixed jaw thereon, of a movable jaw having a direct and loose connection with the handle, the j aw-closin g lever interposed between the jaws, and pivotal links connecting said le ver and jaws, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
