G. (1. WITT. ASH 0R GARBAGE CAN.
No. 559,833. Patented May 12, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE O. \VITT, OF lVESTWOOD, OHIO.
ASH OR GARBAGE CAN.
SPEGIFIUA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,833, dated May 12, 1-898.
Application filed November 25, 1893. Serial No. 491,977. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. WITT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVestwood, in the countyof Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash or Garbage Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a can or receptacle for ashes or garbage. Its object is to produce a cheap, durable, and sightly receptacle; and it consists of the article so produced and the means for producing it economically, all of which will be first fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and will then be particularly referred to, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, in which like parts are indicated by similar reference-letters wherever they occur throughout both views, Figure 1 is a diametrical section of a can or vessel constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, taken through line as a: of Fig. 1.
The body of the vessel A is formed up of sheet metal, preferably galvanized iron or soft sheet-steel, being corrugated vertically, forming ribs and depressions a a between cylindrical end portions or bands a The cylindrical ends of the vessel are strengthened by metal hoops or hands B, which pass over the plain cylindrical ends of the vessel and are secured by rivets. The flanged bottom 0 is pressed up into the bottom of the vessel and secured to the plain rim of by the same rivets that secure the lower hoop B to the body of the vessel.
The flanged edge of the cover H should be also corrugated instead of left plain, as is the cover-H. (Shown in the preferred form,Fig. 1.
I have shown fixed handles 1; but it is obvious that the drop-handle may be used, if desired, instead thereof without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
That I claim is- As an article of manufacture, an ash or garbage receptacle having a general cylindrical form, the sides having longitudinal corrugations formed therein, the extreme ends being cylindrical and not corrugated, a flanged bottom the flange of which fits the lower cylindrical end of the receptacle, and a hoop on the outside of this cylindrical lower end, the outer surface of said hoop being approximately flush with the outer curves of the corrugations whereby the receptacle is reinforced and has a general cylindrical external form, substantially as set forth.
GEORGE G. WITT. lVitnesses:
FRANK S. DAVIS, GEo. J. MURRAY.
