UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL NE\VSTEAD GOODMAN, OF-PI-IILADELPI-IIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GUARD OR SHIELD FOR LAMPS OR LANTE'RNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 559,078, dated April 28, 1896. Ap li ation fil d November 21,1895. Serial No. 56 9,617. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL NEWSTEAD GOODMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, (Germantown,) in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards or Shields for Lamps or Lanterns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to lamps or lanterns, and particularly to that class thereof which is usually employed in connection with bicycles and similar vehicles; and the object of the invention is to provide a shield or protector for this class of lamps or lanterns which will serve as a means to prevent the burner or flame thereof from being extinguished.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanyin g drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a lamp or lantern provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a front View thereof, and Fig. 3 a plan view.
In the practice of my invention I provide a lamp or lantern A, which may be of the usual or any desired form of construction and which is provided with a reflector B, a base 0, and perforations D for the admission of air at or The lamp or lantern A is also provided with side glasses E, but one of which is shown, and the top thereof is preferably contracted, as shown in dotted lines at F, Fig. 1, and over this portion is placed the usual cap-plate or shield G, also shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2 and in full lines in Fig. 3. All these parts are, however, of the usual construction and form no part of this invention, which consists in a supplemental shield, guard, or protector II, which is of the form shown in the drawings and which is curved in the form of a yoke, so as to provide side wings h, which extend backwardly, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the front of which extends downwardly, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and in dotted lines in Fig. 2 at h, the said front being cut out or semicircular in form, so as to fit around that portion of the reflector B which is secured to the body of the lamp or lantern.
The shield, guard, or protector H is continued or projected above the lamp or lantern and above the parts F and G, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and may be secured in place by springs K, connected with a cross-bar L, or in any desired manner, and when thus constructed and arranged it serves as a perfect guard for the flame and prevents the rush of air into the upper part of the lamp or lantern, by which the flame is extinguished.
My invention is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and at the same time is comparatively inexpensive and does not add materially to the cost of the lamp or lantern to which it is attached.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination with a bicycle or other lantern of an auxiliary guard or shield curved in the form of a yoke and provided with backwardlyextending wings, said guard being fashioned so as to fit about a part of the lantern-reflector and being secured in place by springs, or other devices, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 18th day of November, 1895.
SAMUEL NEWSTEAD GOODMAN. Witnesses EDMUND J. E. BRIGGS, ROBERT THOMAS.
