Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOMIS W. RUSSELL, 0F GALESBUBG, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVED BUCKLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent bla-55,717, dated June 19, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOMIS W. RUSSELL, of Galesburg, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters oi' reference marked thereon. making a part of this speciiication.
My invention consists in a metallic ring or clasp, A, with a small block, b, and larger block c, both ot'said blocks having a small groove or gutter, x, for the ring or clasp to be placed in.
This buckle can be made of wood or metal, and in any of the hereinafter-described forms: First, a small block of metal, b, of a size to suit the width of the leather or bag to be buckled, provided with the groove as, being' rounded at the ends and havinga level corrugated surface at the bottom; then a similar block, c, made slightly longer than the block b. Connect the two by a metallic clasp, A, and the buckle is complete.
A buckle 011 this principle may be of two pieces of ordinary wood. with a groove, and
connected by a metallic clasp or ring, as shown in Fig. 1.
In the use of a buckle upon the principle herein described it will be seen that the pieces of leather or other material are placed between the parts b and c, with the ring or claspA around them. By slanting the clasp A in an oblique direction either way the blocks b and c slide in opposite directions and compress the parts ot' leather or other material close to each other, trmly holding them together, so that the more the parts are drawn in opposite directions the more rm the connection, and are held by the corrugated surfaces.
When the clasp or ring is in a vertical position the leather B can be easily extracted from the buckle, or the buckle from the leather, or can be slid to the required place upon the leather.
In the construction of this buckle the parts can be made of a size to suit the width of traces or other harness, and can be connected to the ring or clasp in any of the ordinary or known Ways.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ring or clasp A and blocks l) and c, provided with a groove and corrugated on their inner surfaces, being made of wood or metal, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
As evidence that I claim the foregoing IV LOMIS W. RUSSELL.
Witnesses Jas. AEELEGK, E. J. HoLLIs'rER.
