ADAM PROBOLA, OF CLEiVELAND, OHIO.
LUNCH-BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,370, dated March 17, 1896.
i Application led October 2, 1895. Serial No. 564,467. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM PROBOLA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lunch-Baskets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to lunch-baskets, and the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts substantially as shown and described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved lunchbasket with the lid raised. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional elevation with the lid closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the handle and its support, as hereinafter described.
The basket herein is intended to combine cheapness and simplicity of construction with utility and attractiveness.
As shown, the basket consists in the body part having solid wooden bottom A and ends B, and longitudinal connecting-pieces C along the front and rear thereof, thus forming a skeleton outline of rectangular form. This body thus constructed has any suitable covering of flexible material D over both the sides and ends thereof. Ordinarily a common oil-cloth will suifce; but, if preferred, basketwork or other open-work material may be used, and in this case I show ornamental bordering` E, which adds to its appearance. The front and rear of the box is open from top to bottom, except as it is covered with the oilcloth or other covering D and the longitudinal panels or strips C. This not only contributes to lightness, but it leaves the sides flexible, and thus contributes to the appearance also of the basket.
The lid or cover G is hinged to the box and has Wood on its four sides to form a frame, and is covered with light material D, like that which covers the box itself, and with the same kind of bordering to give it finish. This cover or lid has two large openings II near its ends and middle, and over these on the outside is set what may be called the spider K, having numerous perforations 2 about its convex body, so as to afford a free outlet for the air and to obtain perfect ventilation of the inside of the basket. This spider has two angular legs 4, which are driven into and through the soft wood from the top of the cover and are clinched at their lower ends by bending them to right angles, as seen in Fig. 2, and thus serve to fasten the spiders firmly upon the cover. The bail or handle end is engaged in loops upon the top of the spiders K, and the said spiders are made ornamental as Well as useful for holding the handle and providing ventilation. A suitable lock or catch 5 on the cover engages a projection G on the box, and thus serves to hold the cover down.
What I claim isei In a lunch-basket a box or body portion and a cover having Ventilating-openings in its top, perforated spiders arranged over said openings and fixed to the cover, and a handle or bail supported in said spiders, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand to the foregoing specification on this 12th day of September, 1895.
ADAM PROBOLA.
