UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,539, dated June 12, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, ROBERT E. ROGERS and JAMES BLACK, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Steam-Boilers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and marks thereon.
The drawings forming part of this specification represent a vertical boiler, a, with circu lating-tubes b, placed and arranged within a shell, c, which, by an additional plate or shell, d, has a water-space, e, that, by tubes or pipes j', is in communication with the water-space and steam-space of the boiler a.
Figure 1 of these drawings is a view of such vertical boiler, a portion of the shell thereof having been removed to show the interior, and Fig. 2 is a View had by transverse section ot' Fig. 1, at the point ot' the red-"line marking thereon.
The grate-surface of this boiler is indicated byg, and it will be noticed that the boiler and tubes are so suspended within the shell, suitable t-ies, supports, and bracings being used to effect such suspension, as to expose the entire boiler and tubes to the fuel and the products of combustion. rlhe points ofvatlachment and insertion ofthese tubes, both at their upper and lower ends, alternate above and below each other, respectively, so that the perforations of the plate shall not injure the strength thereof, which would be likely to result if such perforations were in line with each other. The drawings represent one set of these tubes only, but, as is evident, two or more sets may be used, such points of attachment for the ends of' the tubes being selected as would be least likely to weaken the boilerplate by the pcrforations being too near each other.
These drawings also represent the tubes b as being` vertical, while they may be placed so as to be spirally or helically inclined.
In order to increase the facility for generating steam rapidly and economically, tubes or pipes may be arranged within the interior or chamber of the products of combustion, connecting the lower portion of the water-space of the shell with the upper or steam portion thereof; and for a like purpose, as well as for increasing the circulation of the water within the boiler and the water-space ofthe shell, an intermediate annular water-space havin g tubes on one or both of its sides or surfaces may be interposed between the tubes of the boiler a Iand the exterior water-space of the shell, and connected with the water and steam spaces thereof by suitable tubes or pipes at the bot tom and top, or near the same, of the boiler and shell water-space.
Instead of the pipes/'for connecting the upper portion of the space of the boiler with the water-space or steam-space of the shell being used, the boiler may be expanded at this point, or at the upperend, with holes or tubes through the expanded or widen ed-out portion, oraspace may be left between the expanded portion and the shell water-space for the passage of the esca-ping products of combustion, and short tubes or pipes may be used, in connection with the expanded portion and the shell-space, for the circulation ofthe steam and water, and in case the annular water-space interposed between the outer shell water-space and the boiler a be used, tubes or pipes forthe passage of the products of combustion may be connected with this interposed annular water-space, such tubes being attached to the upper and lower plates or sheets thereof, and passing up through the water therein.
That we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
One or more water spaces or jackets surrounding or in combination with the boiler a, constructed substantially as herein recited, said water spaces or jackets having or not the tubes for circulation and exposure to heat, and being provided with tire-tubes or not, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
