UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
HIRAhIV. FERNALD, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
STOVE ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,997, dated February 18, 1896.
Application filed July 12, 1895. Serial No. 555,718. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HIRAM V. FERNALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple form of attachment for stoves which may be readily applied to any stove and will serve not only as a hood to convey away the gases, odors, and smoke arising from the cooking, but also as a dish-warmer for articles already cooked and as a stove-shelf.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of aportion of a .stove, showing my attachment in place. Fig. 2 is a detail view.
The stove is represented at A and the hood of the attachment at B. This hood consists of an inverted receptacle or hood of sheet metal, of a size adapted to inclose the fry pan, pot or other vessel in which the cooking is carried on, and it may be provided with an opening I) at one side through which the progress of the cooking may be observed. Upon the side toward the chimney-pipe it is provided with a lateral opening I), which aligns with a branch 0 of the pipe 0.
The hood is pivotally connected to the stove top by two bars D D, which pass through openings cl d near the lower edge of the hood and are recessed on their lower faces to re- The bars D are connected to the stove-top in any detachable manner, preferably by screw-bolts d passing through openings drilled in the top of the stove and secured in place by nuts d The bars D are extended to the rear for a slight distance and serve to support the hood when it is tipped back to serve as a shelf at the back of the stove. If desired, a skeleton plate may be placed upon these bars, thus forming a shelf. The top of the hood, being flat, also serves as ashelf upon which articles previously cooked may be placed and kept warm.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with a stove, a hood pivoted directly to the top thereof, said hood having a lateral opening adapted to align with a lateral branch of the chimney-pipe, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a stove, a hood arranged to rest upon the top thereof and having a lateral opening aligning with an opening in the stove-pipe, and bars D passing through openings near the lower edge of the hood and detachably and pivotally uniting said hood to the stove-top, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a stove, ahood, the bars for pivotally connecting said hood to the stove, said bars having extensions adapted to receive a plate and thereby form a shelf, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix. my signature in presence of two witnesses.
