UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. E.EMERSON, OF TRENIION, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FO'RGING, SHEARING, AND PUNCHING DEVICES.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,263, dated June 5, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. EMERSON, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anvils; and I do hereby declare the following to be such a full and exact description thereof as will enable any one skilled inthe working of iron and steel to make and' use the same, reference being` had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specilication, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vert-ical section through my improved anvil, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on the line I I ofV Fig. l. l
. The nature of lny improvements consists in combining with an anvil for forging and other smithing purposes a power punch or shears, or both punch and shears, for convenience in cutting metals.
A A is the anvil, constructed of the generally-adopted form modified to suit my improvements. B is a shaft having a pinion, C, keyed upon it, and having a square or other shaped head on each end, to be received in a corresponding opening in the end of a lever or wrench, D, which may be applied to either end of the shaft B.
rlhe pinion C makes in to the toothed segment E on the long end of the lever F, having its fulcrum at G. The short end H of the lever is also a toothed segment having its center at G, and its teeth mesh into those of the rack K, moving vertically in guiding-recesses and carrying at its lower end a punch L, which may be of any desired form, to act as a slotter or a gummer for saws, or for any punching purpose, or it may be for a former.
The die L for the punch is in a block let into a groove in the bed of the anvil, dovetailed on one side and secured by a key, M, driven between the other side of the groove and the block. The sides of the groove are made parallel, while the block is made wider at one end than at the other, and the key has a correspondin g taper.
The metal after being punched is cleared from the punch by a device, 0, common to punching-machines, consisting of a fork having its prongs horizontal and one on each side of that punch a short distance above the die, and firmly secured by a set-screw to the end of the anvil.
One of the blades, N, of the shears N N is secured in a suitable manner to one side of the recess which contains the lever F in the body ofthe anvil, and the other blade, N', is secured to at projection from the short end of the lever F, so that its edge shall form an angle with that of N in a manner common to shears for cutting` metal.
When the lever or wrench D is vibrated the pinion U on the shaft B causes the lever F to vibrate and give motion 'to the punch with great power by means of the segment H and rack K. The same movement of the leverwrench D also causes the shears to perform their work through themedia of the pinion and segment E in the lever F. The workman at the anvil thus has no occasion to lose time and heat in seeking to have these offices performed oftentimes at some distance from the forge.
Having thusfully described my improvements, whatI claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An anvil, shears, and ,punching-machine, arranged, combined, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth. Y
