GEORGE SPIRES, OF LAKE ODESSA, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF 'IWVO-THIRDS TO IVILLIAM GILSON AND STEPHEN MALLERY, OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR OR SASH JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,400, dated December 31, 1895.
Application filed April 22, 1895. Serial No. 546,775. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it-known that I, GEORGE SPIRES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Odessa, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented and produced a new and original door or sash jack for carpenters and joiners in holding doors, window-sash, &c., while being jointed and fitted for their frames, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, showing the parts thereof.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe the construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A A represent the lower sills.
B is a cross-sill connecting A A, which are gained at the center to receive it.
C is an adjustable jaw moving in mortise g in cross-sill B by means of thumb-screw G, as will more fully appear hereinafter. D is a pivoted j aw held in mortise h by bolt 2', passing through cross-sill B and tenon in jaw D. These jaws O and D, when working, are parallel to each other and hold the door or sash, as the case may be, firmly while being jointed for their frames.
E is a lever attached to top of jaw D, forming a right angle with it. E is a spring resting in cross-sill B and lever E at la la, which are sockets made to receive the spring. The object of this spring is to hold j aw D, by means of lever E, firmly against the door or sash, as the case may be, and to permit the opening of the jaws O and D by means of foot-pressure on E at m.
G is a thumb-screw passing through crosssill B at b and resting in cross-sill B at d.
H is a graduated scale attached to'cross-sill B at H. By means of this scale the distance between the jaws O and D may be measured, and thumb-screw G will set jaw O at the desired distance from jaw D, according to the width of the door or sash to be held.
I represents the heads of brads, which extend downward through each end of A A into the floor, holding the jack firmly.
c is an outer shoulder on thumb-screw G. a is an inner shoulder on thumb-screw G in the form of a stationary nut.
17 is a plate-washer between shoulders c and 5 5 a and attached to the end of cross-sill B. By means of these shoulders at and c thumb-screw G is held firmly to its place in cross-sill B.
e e are the threads on thumb-screw G, working in the threads in nut f, which is a stationary nut, mortised in the tenon of jaw C.
By means of thumb-screw G and its threads 6 e working in the threads of nut f, jaw O can be set to any desired distance from j awD.
Z is a shoulder of jaw O, resting upon and moving upon cross-sill B as jaw O is adjusted. The object of this shoulder is to form a shoulder or brace to jaw C.
j is leather or rubber pads, inserted between and annexed to jaws O and D, to prevent injury to or bruising of door or sash, as the case may be, held by the jaws.
h is a mortise in which the tenon of jaw D plays.
What I claim is 1. In a clamp for holding doors, windows, or the like, a sill having mounted therein a pair of clamping jaws, one of said jaws being pivoted to the frame and retained in holding contact with the work by a spring engaging the frame and a lever arm extending from said pivoted jaw.
2. In a clamp for holding doors, windows, or the like, a sill having mounted therein a pair of clamping jaws with padded faces, one of said jaws being adjustable by means of a screw mounted in the frame, engaging a nut mounted in the jaw; the other of said jaws being pivoted to the frame and retained in holding contact with the work by a, spring engaging the frame and a lever arm extending from said pivoted jaw as set forth.
