A. 0. COLE. GAME REGISTER. No. 550,123. PatentedNov. 19, 1895.
W 5 9 ,:m Q MW y mwm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS O. COLE, OF KANKAKEE, ILLINOIS.
GAME-REGISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,123, dated November 19, 1895. Application filed February 11, 1895. $erial No. 537,941. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMOS O. COLE, acitizen of the United States, residing at Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game-Counters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved device for scoring games and more especially with reference to games of cards, and has for its object to provide a simple and convenient arrangement of this character, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan; Fig. 2, a plan of the interior, the cover of the same being'removed; Fig. 3, a transverse section on line 3, Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow; Fig. 4, a transverse section on angular line 4, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 a broken-away view in perspective of the dialwheels, shoving the operating features in de tail.
A may represent a case or box of any suitable form, having a removable cover or top I3. The top of the cover is provided with a units dial-face O and a dial-face 0, having numerals disposed thereon in a circle. The lower end of a spindle ais provided with a suitable bearing in the bottom of the inclosing case, as at a, the upper end projecting through the cover and having an indicatinghand a rigidly mounted thereon. This hand is provided with a finger-grasp a so that the same may be conveniently rotated together with its spindle. A units dial-wheel D is rigidly mounted on spindle a and is provided at one side with a turned-up lip a and a laterally-projecting tooth a A multiplying dial-wheel D is rigidly mounted on a spindle b, provided with suitable bearings in the top and bottom of the case and having an indicating-hand secured to the upper projecting end. The wheel D is provided at intervals with a series of teeth (Z, corresponding in number to the divisions on the dial-face.
One end of a spring-pawl d is secured to the interior side wall of the case, as at (1 the opposite loose end extending across the joining edges of the dial-wheels, as shown. This pawl is bent downwardly, so as to have frictional contact with the upper side of the multiplying-wheel, the extreme disengaged end being bent upwardly, as at (1 so that the lip on the units-wheel will readily clear the same when being rotated in either direction. The loose end of the pawl is provided with a notch g for the engagement of the teeth of the multiplying-wheel.
The units-wheel is numbered from 1 to 10 and the multiplying-wheel from 1 to 12, which arrangement is more especially adapted for keeping the count in the game of whist. This arrangement or disposition of the numerals or other characters on the dialwheels may, however, be varied as circumstances may require.
The teeth on the multiplying-wheel correspondin number with the divisions on its dialface.
In operation, with each complete revolution of the units-wheel the lip a thereon passes underneath the loose end of the pawl and raises the same up out of engagement with the engaged tooth of the multiplying-wheel at the same time the tooth a on the unitswheel comes in contact with the same tooth that the pawl has just been disengaged from and rotates the multiplying-wheel the distance of one division-that is, with each complete revolution of the units-wheel the multiplying-wheel registers 10, aggregating one hundred and twenty when the units-wheel shall have made twelve complete revolutions. By this arrangement the points of any game may be scored up. to one hundred and twenty, games of ten points or less being counted on the units-wheel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with an inclosing case, having indicating dial-faces on the top side thereof,
a spindle, journaled in said case, the upper end projecting through the top, an indicating-hand, secured to the projecting end of said spindle, a units-wheel, rigidly mounted on said spindle and provided with an upturned lip and a projecting tooth, a companion spindle, an indicating-hand, secured to the upper end thereof, a 1nultiplying-wheel,
ed on said companion spindle, and a springpawl, adapted to detachably engage with said teeth, whereby with each complete revolution of the units-Wheel the pawl is raised out of engagement and the multiplying-Wheel moved the space of one division, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AMOS O. COLE.
