SPECIFICATION forming of Letters Patent No. 548,508, dated October 22, 1895:

Be it known that l, OMMUND C. BJELLAND,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Traill and State ot' North Dakota, have invented certain new4 and useful Improvements in Attachments for Flower-Pots; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others 'to skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and useY the same, reference being had y to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a iiower-V pot with a growing plant supported by my atzo linesthe adjustment of said standard or supvport and 'its adjustable and expansible hoop.

My invention relates to devices or appliances for supporting and sustaining plants growing in a tub, pot, or other similar receptacle; and it consists in the combination, with such a receptacle., of the adjustable supporting device, which will be hereinafter more 4o fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a iiwer-pot, and ,P a living plant growing in the same. Attached removably and adj nstably to one side of the 45 pot or receptacle A is a bracketcomprising a horizontal arm B, having a series of transverse screw-threaded apertures b. b and a depending iiat spike C extending downwardly at right angles to the arm B and having a 5o screw-threaded aperture c near its upper end,
in which works the inner end of a thumbscrew D, the threaded shank of which also works through a threaded aperture e in a depending spring-tongue E, of the configurationl shown more clearly in Fig. 5, so that the upper edge of the plant-receptacle A may be clamped firm-ly between the depending spike C and spring-tongue E by tighteningupthe thumb-screw D. I
In order that the bracket B C E may get a firm bearing upon the upper edge of the receptacle A, the rear endof the horizontal arm B, overlapping? the spike C, is made flat and broad, and the spring or tongue E is bent into the conguration shown, so that it may be clamped firmly against the outside of the pot or receptacle by tighteningA or screwing up the'thuxnb-screw D.- The tacle A' some' distance to permit of the adjustment nearer to or farther from theA center of the pot of the tubular standard F, into the hollow lower end ofwhich is. screwed or soldered, whichever may be most convenient, a solidl cylindrical plug F', attenedat its projecting lower end, which has a screw-th readed aperture f,- through whichis inserted the. thumb-screw G, by means of which, in conjunction with any one-ot` the screw-threaded apertures b b, said,tubular standard F is fastened adjustably'and removably upon the horizontal bracket-arm B. By this mode of fastening it will also be seen that the angle of standard F may be changed at will, as indicated bythe broken lines in Fig. 2. Upon this standard F, which is circular in crosssection, slides a sleeve H, provided with a spring-catch I, (shown more clearly in the detail'view, Fig.p4,) the lip c' of which may-engage any one of a series of holes h h, located in a vertical row. in alignment with one another, on one side of the standard. To release the catch Iz' from the hole h, with which,
for. the time being, it-is engaged or interlocked,it is only necessary to press upon the tail l', which releases the catch, so that it may be slid up or down and again interlocked with the appropriately-selected hole jh by letting go of tail I', which permits the lip 1l to slip into and interlock with the appropriate hole inthe standard at any desired distance above the bracket in the receptacle A. .Upon this adjustable sleeve H, opposite to its catch or fastening I, is lfastened by riveting or other end of the .bracket-arm B overlapsy the top of'the recep- IOO soldering a ring or hoop J, made preferably of properly-tempered spring-steel, the free ends of which overlap-and arerconfinedy by loops or keepers K K, as villustrated in Fig. 3,
so that the elastic hoop J may be either. eX- panded 'or reduced.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States- Y y 1'. `The herein-described adjustable attachmentto ower pots, consisting of the bracket comprising the horizontal perforated arm B; depending spike O, Vtongue E and' thumbscrew D, in combination with the adjustable standard F having apertures h h, and sliding sleeve H provided on one side with the springcatch I adapted to engage the row of apertures 72E in 'the standard, and on the opposite or inner side with an expansib'le and contractible hoop J; substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. An adjustable support for living plants growing in a movable receptacle A, consisting of a bracket adapted to be attached, removably, to one side of the receptacle so as to overlap the upper edge of thersame; the tubular and apertured standard F, having a solid perforated bearing-plug F inserted into its lower end; the thumb-screw Gconnecting said plug ltothe apertured horizontal arm ofthe bracket the vertically adjustable sleeve H constructed as described and provided with the springcatch I having the lip t' and tail I;and the elastic expansible and contractible -hoop .I provided with the keeper-bands or loops K K, apertures 1c kandjj and'wire ties Z; all constructed and combined substantially in the manner and'for `the purpose herein shown and set forth.
