SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,170, dated Octoberv 22, 1895. Application filed May 81, 1895. Serial No. 551,270. (No modelJ' To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DON J. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baggage- Seals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements, as herein set forth, in baggage-seals.
Briefly stated, one end of the shackle of my improved seal is provided with a plurality of holes or perforations, over one of which is cemented or otherwise secured a paper thimble or cap surrounding a metal rivet which is cemented or otherwise held within said thimble or cap, the lower portion of which rivet, when the lead disk or seal is pressed, being forced and passing through one of said perforations and into and through the other end or leaf of the shackle, and thereby becoming, with the under portion of the shackle, embedded in the lead seal, part of the lead, when cast on the shackle, also passing through the other perforation or perforations in the shackle to anchor said lead disk thereto and immovably connect said lead disk and the vrigid leaf of the shackle.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of the shackle. Fig. 2 represents the shackle with the metal rivet and its inclosing and protecting thimble or cap in position, part of said thimble or cap being broken away to show the rivet therein. Fig. 3 represents an under side View in perspective of a shackle having the lead disk cast thereon over the rivet-containing thimble. Fig. 4c represents a vertical sectional view of the seal previous to pressing. Fig. 5 represent-s a vertical sectional view of the com` pleted seal after pressing.
1 represents the shackle, which is shown as consisting of a iiat strip of any suitable metal bent or curved in the form of two leaves or ends or tongues. In forming myimproved seal for car-doors and other purposes holes or perforations 2 3 are first formed in one leaf or tongue '7, adjacent to one end thereof. A metal rivet fi, having a head 5 and a pointed lower end 8, is then incased by a thimble or cap 6 of paper, andsaid paper thimble or cap is then secured by cement or otherwise to the upper leaf or tongue 7 of the shackle in a positionthereon above the hole or perforation 2, so that the pointed lower end 8 of said rivet et registers with said hole or perforation 2. The object of thus inclosing the rivet by a compressible paper thirnble or cap is that when the lead disk 9 for forming the seal is cast upon the leaf or tongue 7 of the shackle and around the shell or thimble protected rivet, said paper thimble or cap will prevent any portion of the lead coming in contact with the rivet, thereby protecting said rivet from the passage of lead under its head and permitting of the free movement of said rivet through the leaf 7, and also through the other leaf 10 of the shackle independently of the lead when said lead is pressed.
The rivet and paper thimble or cap may be cemented together, if desired. By so doing their connection would be assured, and by such mode of connection paper enveloped or incased rivets can be readily produced in quantities in readiness for attachment by cement or similar adhesive to the leaves, as 7, of shackles. When the lead disk 9 for forming the seal proper is cast upon the leaf 7 of the shackle, a portion thereof enters one or more holes or perforations 3 in said shackle end, as shown at 11, thereby anchoring said lead disk to theshackle. A horizontal slot 12 is by any known means formed through the lead disk, within and through which slot the other end or leaf 10 of the shackle is slid after it has been passed through the hasp of the freight-car door or other article it is desired to seal, and drawn as tightly as desired before pressing the lead seal and sealing the door or other article. When the free end or leaf or tongue 10 has been placed in position and drawn through the slot 12 in the lead disk 9 as far as desired, the lead disk is in the usual manner pressed down upon the leaves of the shackle, which act, as shown in Fig. 5, forces the pointed lower end 8 of the rivet 4 through the erstwhile free leaf 10 of the shackle and into the under portion of the lead seal, thereby securely connecting together the two members of the shackle, the

rivet, and the seal, and rendering itabsolutely impossible to tamper with the seal withoutdetection.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. A seal consisting of a shackle, a cornpressible paper thimbl'e secured thereto, a rivet contained within and incased by said thimbie, and a lead disk surrounding said thimble and incased rivet, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A seal consisting of a shackle composed I of a strip of Hat metal b ent to form a pair of tongues or leaves, a paper thirn-ble securedl to t one of said tongues, a metal rivet contained z 5 thimble, substantially as and for the purpose zo l set forth.
