F. D. HUTGHINS. TEMPORARY BINDER GovRR.
Patented Oct. 15, 1895.
Umano STATES PATENT @Erica FRANK D. HUTCHINS, OF NORWICH, NEW YORK.
TEM PORARY-BINDER COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 547,994, dated October l5, 1895.
, Application iiled May 17| 1895 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK D. HUroHINs, of Norwich, in the county of Ohenango and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary-Binder Covers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in temporary-binding cases.
In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters and figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 shows a plan view of my temporary binder with leaves or pages secured therein. Fig. 2 shows the binder and case or cover in which it is bound in open position. Fig. 3 shows a plan view of the mechanical parts of the binder in closed position. Fig. 4 shows the same in fully-open position. Fig. 5 shows the same in partially-open position and as seen from the lower side of the device, as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 shows a back view of the parts shown in Figs. 3 to 5, inclusive. Fig. 7 shows the blank out of which the body portion of the binder is formed. Fig. 8 shows the blank out of which the hinged fasteners, constituting a, portion of the binder, are formed. Fig. 9 shows a modified form of construction.
inner layer thereof. On theback wall of the binder l are hinged two binding-pieces 3 and 4 upon the wire rod 5 and capable of lateral movement on the rod. On the opposite side of the body 1 from that to which the clampingpieces 3 and 4 are hinged are provided the posts 6 and 7, which are preferably wide in Serial No. 549,605. (No model.)
cross-section and made of the same sheet material. A notch in the upper end of these posts 6 and 7 is adapted to receive the edge ofthe clamping-pieces 3 and 4, respectively, at the slotted openings d d, the end of the post being adapted to pass through the openings d when the clamping-pieces are turned down. Upon the under side of the pieces 3 and 4 is provided a spiral spring 8, operating to force the pieces apart along the hinging-wire 5, and at the same time, when the clamping-pieces are closed, force the edge of each ofthe pieces 3 and 4 at the slots d into the notches in the top of the posts 6 and 7. For retaining the spring 8 in position there are provided on the under side of the pieces 3 and 4 a pair of overlapping arms 3a and 4a, respectively, which pass through the spiral spring and retain it in proper position, so that it can exert its pressure in forcing the clamping-pieces apart, as before stated. The arms 3a and 4a are alike, except that the arm 4a is provided with a lip, as shown, which catches over the arm 3a and slides along on the same to make the arms' register and slide freely upon one anotherwithoutcatching in thespring. When the device or clamping-plates are in open position, apad or number of sheets of paper, as B, having suitable perforations in one end, may be placed upon the pins 6 and 7. The clamping-pieces 3 and 4 are then slid along the hinging-rod 5 toward each other andA turned down upon the upper surface of the pad or sheets of paper until the ends of the posts 6 and 7 pass through the openings d d in the clamping-plates, when by releasing them the spring 8 forces them apart along the rod 5 and the edges of the clamping-plates 3 and 4 engage at the openings d in the notches inthe upper ends of the posts 6 and 7, respectively. In this position the paper or number of sheets of paper in the pad will be securely locked on the posts 6 and 7 and firmly held thereon. By passing the upper end of the posts 6 and 7 through the openings d the posts are securely braced at their upper end, making the device, as a whole, capable of withstanding severe usage. The sheets may be torn out of the binder or removed by reversing the process by which they were placed in the binder.
In the modified form of construct-ion shown in Fig. 9 three posts 6, 7a, and x are provided, which adapt the binder for use with wider paper, if desired. In case of providing an extra middle post a: the clamping-plates 3 and 4 are modified, as shown at 3 and 4', so that one of them Will have two openings for the reception of the posts, as shown. It is evident that four posts could be as readily provided for by suitably modifying the form of clamping-plates and providing openings in each coinciding with the posts.
W'hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a temporary binder of a body, a clamping plate hinged to and longitudinally movable with reference tothe body, and a notched post with which the clamping plate engages, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a temporary binder of a body, a clamping plate hinged to and longitudinally movable with reference to the body, a post on the body, and a spring for moving the clamping plate and holding it engaged with the post, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination in a temporary binder of a body having projections for attaching a binding, binding posts, clamping plates hinged to and longitudinally movable with reference to the body, and a spring acting between the clamping plates to hold them apart and in engagement with the binding posts, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof I have aiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK D. I-IUICIIINS. Witnesses:
GEO. H. MAHAN, A. S. KINNEY.
