To all whom/ it may concern: I
Be it known that I, LEROY S. PFOUTS, a citi' zen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improve-1 ments in Metal Poles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a-part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a side view showing the pole enlarged and broken. Fig. 2 is a view of the top of the pole. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the pole. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through line a; 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sec tion of the insulated hood or cap, showing the insulating-blocks properly located. Fig. 6 is a transverse section or top view of the insulating-block, showing the same properly arranged for use.
The present invention has relation to metal poles designed and calculated for supporting electric wires; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Arepresents the vertical bars, which are formed of a length to correspond with the length of the poledesigned to be constructed, and, as shown, said vertical bars are T-shaped in cross-section, thereby providing the lateral flanges a, which flanges are located upon the outside of a finished pole, and are so located for purpose hereinafter described. The vertical bars A are held the desired distance apart and in proper position with reference to each other by means of the connecting or span bars b, which connecting or span bars are formed in sets or pairs, and the sets or pairs shortened soas to 'givethe finished pole the proper amount of taper or batter. The object and purpose of providing the T-shaped bars is to form flanges for the ends of the connecting or span bars 17 to abut against, and thereby assist in increasing the rigidity of .the pole proper. For the purpose of assisting in bracing the finished pole the diagonal braces c are attached to the bars A, which braces are preferably crossed, as illustrated in the drawings, and are so arranged that their ends will abut against the flanges a, thereby more securely Serial No. 526,268. and better bracing the pole'proper. It will be understood that all of the difierent parts of the pole are to be securely attached together by suitable rivets or bolts. By con- ;structing the poleasdescribed it will form a pleasing appearance, and at the same time ,all of the parts will beexposed, so that they can be properly painted, from time to time, to 'give to the pole a neat appearance and at the same time prevent disintegration.
When it is desired to insulate the top or upper end of the pole, the non-metallic blocks B are placed in the position illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6,after which the hood D is placed over the non-metallic blocks, which non-metallic blocks hold said hood out of contact with the bars A, or other metal parts of the pole .proper. wires the eye-bar d is attached to the hood,
In case it is desired to attach spanflanges a. It will be understood that the nonrnetallic blocks are to be slipped in endwise from the upper end of the pole proper.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the vertical bars A,
.T shaped in cross section, the span bars 1) formed in sets or pairs, and their ends abutted against the flanges a, and the diagonal braces 'c'abutted against the flanges a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the T shaped bars A,
secured together to form a pole, the non-metallic blocks B located between the bars, the hood D located around the blocks B, and over the ends of the bars and provided with the eye bar 01, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
