PORTABLE HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,121, dated July 23, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY H. BATES,3. citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 illustrates my device, in partial section, closed. Fig. 2 shows the device when opened, as in use. Fig. 3 shows a rear view of the same with folded screw. A cheaper form in which the screw alone folds is shown in Fig. 4, with the screw extended at full length.

My invention relates to hooks for suspending garments upon a wall; and it consists in a portable hook and attaching means which can be folded and carried in the pocket for travelers use. It frequently happens that travelers and others are caught in circumstances where it would be very convenient to hang up a coat or overcoat, as in a watercloset at a railway-station, but no means are supplied. A device like mine, folded in compact and small compass and carried in the pocket, proves worth many times its cost in such emergencies.

Referring to the drawings, A is the body of the device recessed, as shown, and having at one end a hook B, suitable for suspending a garment from and preferably folding against the stem or body for convenience of carriage by a rule or stop joint d.

At or near the other end I attach a gimlet-pointed screw 0, hinged or pivoted like a knife-blade, in connection with a spring, as s, and having a squared shoulder with stop, as 6, so as to be held either closed within the stem, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or open at right angles, as shown in Fig. 2. It may also be opened out at full length in a right line with the body or stem, as shown in Fig. 4. When about to be used the screw is opened and screwed by turning the stem as a handle into any woodwork convenient for the purpose,as a Wainscot, door, or partition, where it will be found of ample strength to sustain any ordinary burdenlikely to be placed on the hook. It may be used to hang baskets or bundles on, and the device will also be found useful as a door-fastener, where bolts are insufficient, by screwing it into the crack of the door near the lock, or it can be utilized as a corkscrew in emergency.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A portable garment hook, having atone end a folding gimlet pointed screw by which it may be securely attached to a Wainscot or wall when opened, or safely carried in the pocket when closed, substantially as specified.

2. A portable hook having a hollow or recessed stem, as A, with a gimlet pointed screw pivoted at one end thereof and folding into the recess of the stem, whereby the device is made convenient for pocket carriage, substantially as specified.

'3. A portable garment hook consisting of a recessed body or stem, a folding stop jointed hook, and a folding screw as a means of attachment to a wall, Wainscot, door or partition, substantially as specified.

4. The pocket utensil herein described, comprising the recessed body or stem A, hook B, and folding spring controlled screw 0, substantially as specified.

5. The portable utensil herein described, consisting of the recessed body or stem A, folding stop jointed hook B, pivoted folding screw 0, square jointed and stop jointed as at e, and spring a, substantially as specified.

6. The new article of manufacture herein described, comprising the stem or body A, pivoted screw 0, and folding hook B, pivoted and stop jointed as at d, and formed with curved outer extremity covering and protecting the square jointed upper end of the stem when folded, substantiallyas specified.
