JOHN H. EMERSON, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI; I P
HORSE-COLLAR FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,347, dated June 18, 1895.
Application filed March 12, 18 95.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. EMERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Collar Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a collar with my improved fastening applied. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof, and Fig. 3 is a perspective of the fastening unlocked and with the two sections of its 'members separated to more fully show the construction thereof.
My invention relates to fastenings for separably connecting the lower abutting ends of horse collars.
The object of the invention is to provide such a device which will be simple in its construction, easy to fasten and unfasten and which when in its fastened position will be held from becoming unfastened by means of the hames strap which will pass between pairs of registering lugs or projections thereon.
The invention will be hereinafter described and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The fastener comprises two coupling members in the form of hollow caps A A which receive the abuting ends of the collar. Each cap is horizontally divided into upper and lower sections a a respectively; the vertical flanges b b of which .abut at their adjacent edges, while the rim forming flanges b of the section ais formed with depending extensions b which fit over corresponding cut away portions 12 of the rim forming flange?) of the lower section a of the cap A or A, and overlap the The forward edges of the extensions are cut away as at b to receive the projecting end portions 1) of the ends of flange b and by this construction the two cap sections a a will be neatly fitted together and held from slipping one on the other and to still further prevent such action I provide the inner side of each flange bwith depending set-in No. 511,466. (No model.)
cap section a. These tangs are provided with registering bolt holes to receive the bolts 0 which extend through the collar ends and secure the caps in place thereon. The collar ends may be cut 0E where the collar is too large, a portion of the filling removed and the cut ends inserted between the cap sections and the bolts passed through the tangs and collar and the caps be thus firmly drawn together and secured in place. Thus all finishing of the collar ends by leather or fabric caps is obviated.
Upon the lower side of the cap A are formed a pair of parallel depending lugs ff which project beyond the face flange b thereof and extend beneath the lower edge of the cap A when the two caps are brought face to face. The lugs f 1 lie parallel with the front and rear faces of the collar and at opposite sides of the hames groove so as to receive the hames strap between them. The lower edge of the cap section A is formed with a similarly situated pair of depending lugs ff which abut the lugs f f when the collar is fastened. Thelower side of the cap A is further provided just in front of the lugs ff with a pair of horizontal hooks g g which project under the lower side of the cap A and thence inwardly over the rear edges of the lugs ff and thus hold the end caps A A face to face and prevent the collar ends from moving apart in opposite directions.
The lugs ff,f f, prevent separation of the collar laterally or in a direction at right angles to its ends as they are engaged by the hames strap which passes between them and around the collar.
It will be seen therefore that to unfasten the collar the hames must be first removed and the collar ends moved laterally till the hooks g g are disengaged from the lugs f f and then the collar ends may be moved apart in opposite directions. The cap A is further provided with a loop h which is integral with its lower section a and which projects beneath the lower end of the collar to receive the martingale.
A suitable strip or pad of leather 7; will be secured to the inner side of the collar .to cover cap is provided with a pair of attaching tangs 50 c c the upper tang 0 extending from the flange a, b of the upper section a and the lower tang 0 extending from the flange b of the lower the two caps A A and protect the neck of the animal from injury.
Having thus described my invention, what collar ends, provided with upper and lower apertured tangs or extensions for securing them to the collar; the end portions of the cap sections being provided with overlappingportions to prevent slipping and the face flange of one section having a tongue projecting over the inner side of the corresponding flange of the other section, a pair of depending parallel lugs on the lower section of each cap for the harnes strap, the lugs on one section projecting under the lower edge of the opposed cap, and the latter being provided with a pair of horizontal hooks projecting in the same direction under the lower side of the other cap and around the lugs thereon, substantially as set forth.
, JOHN H. EMERSON. .Witnesses:
