UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. MADDOX AND HENRY DUNLAP, OF WEST UNION, OHIO.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming pa1'At of Letters Patent No. 541,173, dated June 18, 1895.
Application filed April 6, 1895.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN A. MADDOX and HENRY DUNLAP, citizens of-the United States, residing at West Union, in the county of Adams and State of Ohio, have invented a v new and useful Ohurn, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in churns.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of churns, to enable butter to be rapidly produced, and to provide means whereby the butter may be separated from the rest of the contents of the churn body, after the operation of churning has been completed.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended. Y
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a churn constructed Vin accordance with this invention, the dasher mechanism being elevated above the ohurn-body and slightly swung outward. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view, the dasher mechanism being located within the churn-body. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, the parts being arranged as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. iis a detail perpective view of the butter receptacle or strainer.
Like numerals of .reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a cylindrical churn body, provided with legs 2, and having a circular cover 3, which is provided with a hinged section 4, and which is pivotally mounted between curved arms 5 of a vertically movable slide 6. The slide 6 is located at one side of the churn body, and is arranged in a vertical way or socket 7, substantially rectangular in cross- Section, and constructed of sheet metal. The arms 5 of the slide form a semi-circular support and are provided at their ends with perforations to receive pivots 8 of the cover 3.
The cover 3 has centrally journaled on it a vertical dasher-shaft 9, dependingfrom the cover and having arranged on it reversely rotating dashers 10 and 11. The dasher 10 is secured to and carried by the shaft, and is Serial No.'544,800. (No model.)
provided with upper and lower oppositely disposed horizontal perforated arms or blades, and has a central connecting portion or web 'ner dasher, and the latter rotates freely without coming in contact with the outer dasher. The outer dasher is provided at its top and bottom with tubular portions or bearings arranged loosely on the shaft, and the upper tubular portion is formed by a sleeve 14, eX- tended vertically above the cover, and provided with a collar which bears against the outer face of the cover, whereby the dasher is properly positioned on the shaft.
Bevel gear wheels or pinions 15 and 16 are secured respectively to the upper end of the shaft, and to the upper end of the sleeve, and are simultaneously engaged and reversely rotated by a bevel gear wheel 17 of a shaft l18, which is mounted on a swinging frame 19, hinged to one side of the churn body. The outer end of the drive shaft is provided with a balance wheel 20, having a suitable handle,
whereby the dasher mechanism is operated.
The frame 19 is hinged adjacent to the socket or casingto a rectangular boxing 21,
and consists vof a substantially rectangular standard, which, when in a vertical position is adapted to cover and conceal the socket 7. The hinged frame is provided at its top with an arm, and has suitable bearings for the drive-shaft, and it is connected at a point intermediate of itsends to one end of a wire cord or rope 22, which passes over a pulley 23, and through an opening of the socket or casing 7, and has its other end attached to the lower end of the slide 6, whereby, when the hinged frame is swung downward, the slide is raised vertically, and carries with it the cover and the dasher mechanism.
The hinged frame is locked in its vertical position by a catch 24, hinged or journaled on the swinging frame, and provided at opposite sides of the same with arms substantially L-shaped, and arranged to engage eyes of the churn body.
When the slide is elevated, the dasher mechrooy anism is carried above the churn body, and a cylindrical or circular receptacle vor pan 25, which is swiveled to the lower end of the shaft, is also located above the churn body.` The receptacle is provided with a central sleeve or socket, and is swiveled by means of a setscrew 26, mounted on the sleeve or socket, and
- and in tilting the receptacle the perforated side is designed to be turned inward over the churn body. This will permit the contents of the receptacle to drain thoroughly, Without liability of spilling any of the liquid on the iloor or other supportiug surface. l
The churn body is provided at one side, near its bottom, with a drain opening or spout, which may be closed in any suitable manner,
such as by means of a plug, or it may have al valveand near its top the body is provided with a handle 27.
It will be seen that the churn is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and that it is readily manipulated, and may be readily arranged for draining the butter after the operation of churning has been completed, and that the butter is readily collected and removed.
Changes in the form, proportiomand the minor details of construction maybe resorted to without departin'g from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
l. ln a churn, the combination of a churn body, a vertically movable slide mounted on the churn body and provided with arms, a cover arranged on the churn body and pivotally mounted on said arms and carried by the slide, dasherimechanism connected with and Ycarried by the cover, a butter receptacle con,
nected with and adapted to be raised by the dasher mechanism, and means for elevating the slide and raising the dasher mechanism and the receptacle above the churn body, whereby those parts may be swung outward, substantially as described.
2. In a churn, the combination of a churn body, a cover arranged thereon, a slide capable of vertical movement and mounted on the churn body and provided with arms located f at opposite sides of the cover and'pivotally connected therewith, dasher mechanism carried by the cover, and a downwardly swinging frame hingedly'mounted at one side of the body and connected with'and adapted to elevate the slide, and carrying gearing for operating the dasher mechanism, substantially as described.
3. In a churn, the combination of a churn body, a vertically'movable slide mounted on the churn body and provided at its upper end with arms, a Lcover pivoted to the arms and arranged on the body, dasher mechanism carried by the cover, a butter receptacle connected with the dasher mechanism, a pulleys mounted on the body, a downwardly swinging frame, and a flexible connection arranged on the pulley and having one end attached to the bottom of the slide and its other end Se-` cured tothe frame, substantially as described. 4. In a churn, the combination of a body, a
cover carrying the dasher mechanism, a vertical socket located at one side of the body at the exterior thereof,a vertical slide arranged in the socket and connected with the cover and adapted to elevate the same, anda downwardly swinging frame connected with the slide and adapted to elevate the same and located adjacent to the socket and provided with a hollow standard receiving and concealing the socket and the slide when in a vertical position, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto aixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. MADDOX.
HENRY DUNLAP.
