To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, GEORGE L. WEBB and SAMUEL O. CAMP, citizens of the United States, residing at Perryville, in the county of Boyle and Stateof Kentucky,.have invented a new and useful Broom-Head, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in broom-heads, adapted to be refilled by the consumer at small cost and with facility, the objects in view being to provide simple means for engaging the broom corn and a readily operable device for holding such securing means in operative position.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a broom-head constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 isa vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view showing the shackle in its locked position. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the shackle in its unlocked position. Fig. 5 is a detail view, in perspective, of the lever of the shackle. Fig. 6 is a similar View of one of the sections of the head.

l designates the handle to which are attached the sections or members 2 of the improved head, said sections or members being provided at their upper edges with inwardly concaved projections. 3 which fit opposite sides of the lower end of the handle and are secured thereto by means of the wire wrapping t or equivalent devices.

The sections or members of the head are preferably constructed of sheet metal having sufficient elasticity to cause them to spring outward or from each other when not restrained, and they are'provided with inturned terminal overlapping flanges or ears 5 which are adapted to cover the ends of the bunch of broom corn secured in the head. Each section or member is provided upon its inner surface with a longitudinally disposed web 6 which is toothed or serrated to engage the broom-corn, and this web is preferably formed integral with the section or member by bending the same inward at an intermediate point, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. Each section or member is also provided upon its outer side with alongitudinal groove 7, and when the serrated web is constructed in the manner above described said groove is formed by the portions of the walls of the sections or members adjacent to the webs.

.The shackle or locking device for securing the sections or members of the head in their contracted or closed position comprises opposite b'ails 8, adapted to lie inthe grooves 7 and having their terminal arms 9 connected to the angle-levers 10 which are thus disposed at the ends of the head. The arms of the bails are respectively connected to different points of the levers, whereby when the levers are swung in one direction the bails are tightly drawn into the grooves 7 and the sections or members of the head are drawn together or contracted, and when the levers are moved in the opposite direction the bails are loosened to release the sections or members. The levers are provided with terminal studs 11, which serve as locking studs, and engage registering perforations 12 in the overlapping end flanges or cars of the sections or members when the latter are in their closed position. Thus to replace broom corn, when worn, the shackle or locking-device is disengaged by withdrawing the studs of thelevers from the registering perforations in the ears or flanges and swinging the levers in the opposite direction to that indicated by the arrows in Figs. 3 and 4, to allow the sections or members to spread and disengage the ser- Various changes in the form, proportions,

and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus described our invention, we claim- 1. In a broom-head, the combination of opposite separable sections or members, having inturned overlapping ears, and a locking device operatively connected with the sections or members and provided with levers having studs to engage registering perforations in said ears, substantially as specified.

2. In a broom-head, the combination of opposite separable sections or members, having inturned overlapping ears provided with perforations which are adapted to register when the sections or members are in their operative positions, of a locking device having opposite bails to engage said sections or members, and levers connected to the terminal arms of the bails and provided with studs to engage said perforations, substantially as specified.

3. In a broom-head, the combination of op posite separable sectionsor members having terminal overlapping ears and exterior longitudinal grooves, said cars being provided with registering perforations, of a locking-device separable from the sections or members and having opposite bails to engage the grooves in the outer sides of the sections or members, and levers connecting the terminal arms of the bails and provided with studs to engage the perforations in the ears, substantially as specified.

4. In a broom-head, the combination of 0pposite sections or members having exterior longitudinalgrooves and interior longitudinal upstruck Webs extending inward from the floors or bottoms of said exterior grooves and having serrated edges to engage broom-corn, and means for locking the sections in their operative positions, such means consisting of bails seated in said exterior grooves, and levers connecting the terminal arms of the bails and provided with studs to engage perforations in terminal over-lapping ears of the sections, substantially as specified.

5. In a broom-head, the combination with opposite separable sections or members, of a locking device having opposite bails to engage the sections or members,levers connecting the arms of said bails, and means for securing the levers in adjusted positions, substantially as specified.
