To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, KATHERINE M. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.

This improvement relates to that class of pen holders-usually employing stylographic or fountain pensin which a tube or socket is adapted to be removed from the upper end of the pen holder and slipped over the lower end to protect the pen when the pen is not in use, and replaced on the upper end of the pen holder when the pen is to be used. The present invention relates to an improved construction whereby a pen wiper is provided within said tube or socket, said pen wiper being adapted to remain out of sight within the socket or tube until it is needed, when it can be slid up into view, so that the tube or socket can be removed from the upper end'of the pen holder and serve as a handle for the pen wiper while the latter is applied to and wiping the pen.

The nature of the; invention is fully described below, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a penholder embodying my invention and in position for use in writing. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the socket or tube in vertical section. Broken lines in this figure show the position of the socket when it is protecting the pen. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the pen -wiper pushed up into position for use and the cap removed. The penholder is represented as having had, a portion broken off. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the pen-wiper.

A represents the main portion of the pen holder, B the portion immediately holding the pen, and O the tubular socket which is applied to the upper end A of the main portion A when the pen is to be used, and to the portion B when the pen is to be protected as, for instance, when it is to be carried in the pocket, in the usual manner. ,The upper end of the tube or socket G is-provided with a cap 0 which preferably is held in position by friction, as shown in Fig. 2, but which can be omitted if it is desired to economize in the manufacture of the pen holder. 7

D is a disk or ring of suitable diameter to fit within the tube or socket C and be moved up and down therein. A pin E extends from the periphery of this disk or ring horizontally through a vertical slot F in the socket O, the outer end of this pin being thickened into a head or handle E. Upwardly from this disk or ring E extend a considerable number of narrow strips or strings H made of chamois skin or analogous material. The lower ends of these strings or shreds are secured tightly within the ring or disk, which thus constitutes a head, in any suitable manner. When the pen does not need to be cleaned the pen wiper D H thus ,formed is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, that is to say, as far down in the socket as the slot F will allow.

When the pen needs cleaning the cap 0 is first pushed into the socket as far as the slot F will allow.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a pen holder of the character described, the combination with the tube or socket 0 provided with thevertical slot E, of the herein described pen wiper consisting-0f the head D, the upwardly projecting bunch of strips H and the handle E extending through said slot, said head fitting into said tube or socket and located in the upper end thereof, whereby the upward sliding of the head pushes out the said strips and allows them to expand over the upper end of the tube or socket, substantially as described.
