To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER DELHoM- MER, of Breaux Bridge, in the parish of St. Martin and State'ot' Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Wrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved wrench, which is comparatively simple and durable in construction, designed for use on nuts, pipes and other articles, and arranged to permit the user to conveniently grip and hold an article in the jaws of the wrench.

The invention consists of gripping jaws,

pivoted together, a locking band or bail held on one of the jaws, and a slidable wedge on the other jaw to engage the said band.

The invention also consists in certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective view of the improvement.

The improved wrench is provided with the arms A and B, pivotally connected with each other at their rear ends at O, and formed or provided on their front ends on opposing faces with serrated or toothed jaws A and B respectively, adapted to engage the article to be gripped and turned. The twojaw armsA and B are pressed apart by a spring D, held on one of the jaw arms and engaging with its free end the other arm, as plainly shown in the drawing.

Near the forward end of the arm Bis secured a holder or bail E, extending upward over the other arm A, and adapted to be engaged by a wedge F, held to slide 'on the top of the arm A, so that when the article is gripped between the jaws A and B, then the wedge F is moved forward under the bail E,

so as to securely lock the two arms A and B- in position to firmly hold the article between the jaws.

The wedge F is formed with a rearwardlyextending shank F, having a longitudinal slot l5 engaged by a screw G screwing in the j in contact with the article.

arm A, and which when loosened, permits of sliding the wedge F to engage or disengage the bail E, after which the said wedge can be secured in place by screwing up the screw G.

The device is used as follows: The screw G is first loosened and the wedge F is moved rearwardly so as to free the two arms A and B, to permit the spring D to open the jaws by pressing the arms A and B apart. The article is then engaged between the gripping jaws A and B, and then the arms are pressed downward to firmly engage the article between the jaws, after which the wedge F is moved forward so as to pass under the top of the bail E, to securely lock the two arms together, to hold the gripping jaws A and B The wedge F is then fastened in position by screwing up the screw G. The wrench is then turned to turn the nut or other article gripped, and when the article is in the desired position, the operator loosens the screw G, and moves the wedge F rearward to again permit the jaws to open by the action of the spring D.

It will be seen that this wrench is very simple and durable in construction, can be easily manipulated, andis arranged to securely hold the article between the jaws A and B.

Having thus described my invention, 1

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A wrench, comprising pivoted arms carrying gripping jaws, a locking band or bail held on one of the arms, a slidable wedge on the other arm, to engage the said bail, and a screw for fastening the said wedge in position on the arm on which it is movable, substantially as shown and described.

2. A wrench, comprising pivoted and springpressed arms, jaws held or formed on the free ends of the said arms and on opposing faces,

a bail secured on one arm and engaging the v 'other'arm, a wedge held to slide on the arm engaged by the bail, and a screw for holding the said wedge in position, substantially as shown and described.
