MOORE, AND ,WALLACE'A. MOCLINTOCK, OF PHILA- DELPHIA," PENNSYLVANIA.
SURGICAIL OPERATiNG-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 589,231, dated May 14, 1895.
Application filed October 4, 1894. Sen'al No. 524.858. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ALBERT J. MoKEE, residing at Moore, in the county of Delaware, and WALLACE A. MOCLINTOOK, residing-in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of .Pennsylvania, citizens of the United States,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in SurgicalOperating-Tables, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists of an operating table which in its normal position presents the appearance of an ordinary sofa, the back of which may be converted into a table adapted to be raised and lowered bodily, parallel at both ends, or separately at each end, or head or foot, the mechanism employed to accomplish such motions being simple, effective and easily-operated, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents. a perspective view of an operating-table embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse verticalsection thereof. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of the end portion of the back and connected parts when the same are in the horizontal position shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a central longitudinal vertical section thereof,
showing the table with a double top, the parts whereof are in elevated position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of a sofa; B, the arm-rests, and O the back thereof.
In the arm-rests are vertical recesses D, which receive the racks or toothed bars E, which are adapted to be raised and lowered therein, the racks at each end being connected at top by the cross bar F, the rear end of which has a vertical arm G, which enters the slot H on the front or under face of the back 0, and carries a pin J, which enters the under groove K or runway, which is also formed in said face and communicates with said slot, by which provision the back is pivotally connected with said cross bars F, and may be raised and then swung downwardly and forwardly so as to be placed in horizontal position and supported on said bars, forming the operating table, as shown in full lines, or
which are pivoted below to the base of the arm-rests B, and occupy the recesses therein, so as to engage with the racks E, said dogs being extended downwardly below their pivots N, where they are pivoted with stirrups P, which may be depressed by foot, whereby the dogs are forcedinwardly or toward each other, and thus withdrawn from the racks, as shown by the dotted lines Fig. 2, whereby the table may be lowered, it being seen that when the table is raised from the position shown in Fig. 1, to that shown in Fig. 2, the racks. ride freely over the upper ends of the pawls until the table is at the adjusted height,.when the dogs engage with the respective teeth of the racks, and thus firmly hold the table at thev adjusted position.
When the table is to be lowered, the stirrups are depressed, whereby the dogs clear the racks, and the latter are free to be lowered, so that the descent of the table is quickly, easily and effectively accomplished.
The table is made with adouble top, formed of parts 0 hinged in such manner that the various chair positions used in gynecological examinations may be rapidly and readily obtained, see Fig. 3, and dotted lines Fig. 1, but to this feature we do not limit ourselves,
the essential parts being the body having a swinging back, and frames to which the same is connected in such manner that said back is capable of sliding on said frames so as to be placed either in horizontal position over the body, or in a vertical position back of the same, and when in horizontal position to be adjusted at either end or both ends, as has been stated.
When the back is rearward of the body, and the frames are in lowermost position, their cross-bars F may be covered by upholstered end pieces, which are placed-on the arm rests as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, thus practically concealing said cross bars to a patient Who may be subsequently subjected to an operation.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- 1. A body having arm rests with vertical recesses therein, the raising bars E having the connecting cross bars F, the back 0 with the slots H and the grooves K therein, the vertical arms G and horizontal pins J, or the ends of said cross bars, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A body having arm rests with vertical recesses therein, the raising bars E having the connecting cross bars F, the back 0 with the slot H and the groove K therein, the ver'
