WAX-HEEL-BURNI SHING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,209, datedApril 23, 1895. Application filed September 4,1894. Serial No. 522,152. CNornodeL) .To 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN O. OoLLINs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in W aX-Heel-Burnishing Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements on the United States Patent granted to me February 27, 1894, No. 515,653, for wax heel burnishing machines and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanyw ing drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view. Fig. 3 represents a vertical longitudinal section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1 parts being shown in elevation; and Fig. 4 represents a cross section on the line 44 shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In the drawings A represents the base or standard of the machine to which is secured the head B in hearings in which is journaled the driving shaft 0 which is set in a rotary motion by belt power applied to its pulley 0 like that described in my above mentioned patent. I
D, D represent the rockingburnishin g disks having segmental corrugated portions (1, d and smooth portions 11, d and set in a rocking motion by means of a cam or eccentric O on the shaft 0 on which are journale'd the links E, E the outer ends of which are pivoted to links F, F secured to the shafts D, D of the burnishing disks D, D in a manner and for a purpose as. fully shown and described in my aforesaid Letters Patent.
The burnisher shafts D, D are journaled in longitudinal adjustable boxes G, G adapted to be guided in slotted perforations or recesses B, B in the head B as shown in Fig. 4 and they are adjusted simultaneously to and from each other by means of a screw shaft H journaled in bearings in said head and held from longitudinal motion therein;
said shaft having right and left handed screw threads h and h working in correspondingly screw threaded projections on the respective adjustable boxes G, G as shown in Fig. 4.
H is a crank or handle secured to one end of the spindle H and it will thus readily be seen that by turning said handle H the burnisher disks and their boxes are simultaneously adjusted to and from each other as may be needed according to the size of the heel that is to be burnished.
For the purpose of firmly securing the boxes G, G in their adjusted positions I employ set screws I, I which are screwed through the ends of the head B and having their inner ends pressing against the outsides of the boxes G, G as fully shown in Fig. 4. In practice I prefer to provide said set screws with check nuts 71, i so as to prevent their working loose after the boxes have been-properly adj usted.
Between the rocking burnishing disks D, D is arranged a yielding top lift support K against which the lift of the heel is held during the burnishing operation as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Said heel lift support is secured to aspindle 70 passing through a perforation in the head B as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and between said top lift support K and the head B is located a preferably coiled spring L which serves as a yielding support for the boot or shoe heel when held against the top lift support K as shown in Fig. 3.
k is a collar or projection secured to the rear end of the spindle 7c and it serves as a stop to limit the forward motion of the top lift support K as shown in Fig. 3.
In the operation of burnishing the boot or shoe heel its top lift is held in contact with the yielding support K by which the boot or shoe is steadied while being guided against the rocking burnishing disks D, D and said yielding top lift support K also serves to prevent the outer edge of the top lift from being turned over during the burnishing operation.
M in dotted lines in Figs. land 3 represents the boot, the heel m of which is to be burnished and the top lift of which is held with a yielding pressure against the yielding top lift or heel support K during the burnishing operation for the purpose set forth.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim In a burnishing machine the combination with a supporting frame of boxes G G adjustable to and from each other, rock shafts journaled respectively in the boxes and provided with burnishing disks D, D and a yielding top lift support K arranged between said bnrnishing disks substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 7
