Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORRIN C. BURDICT, OF NEI/V HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR PUNCHING.
To. all whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, O. G. BUEDIcr, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and usetul Improvement in the Construction of Dies; and I do hereby declare the following', when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part ot this specification, and represent, in-
Figure l, a front or face view; Fig. 2, a cross-section.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construct-ion of dies for swagin g purposes, and designed particularly for machinery7 for making nuts, but may be used for other purposes; and it consists in forming the die in severalpieces, so that by removing or inserting two or more of the several parts the die may be decreased or increased in size, as for making a. smaller or larger nut.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the'box or die-holder. a a, b b, and c c (more or less in number) are blocks of tempered steel, constructed so as to form two sides of the die, as seen in Figs. l and 3. d 1,6 c, and f f (more or less in number) are similar blocks placed upon either side of the blocks a, b c, so that two of the blocks, d, form the other two sides ofthe die, as seen in Fig. l.
B are screws inserted through the box A to adjust and secure the blocks in their proper position.
As set in Fig. l, the width of the die depends upon the thickness of the blocks a b c. It' desired to reduce the size of the die, remove any two or more ot' the blocks, c c, until the remaining blocks shall be ot' the width required, as seen in Fig. 2. Theil adjust the blocks by means of the screws B, Fig. 2. If desired to make the die larger, any two ofthe blocks, d c j', of equal thickness, may be removed from the side of the die and placed in the position and upon the blocks a b c, to widen the die as required, thus avoiding the necessity and expense of constructing new dies for each and every size required, the extent ot' the variation of the die depending onlyr upon the number and thickness of the blocks, which may be more or less; and the position of the several blocks may he changed to present different sides, as seen and described in the patent granted to me dated January 5, 1864.
Having therefore thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A die constructed substantially in the manner described, so that the size ot' the die may be adjusted by taking from or adding to the number of parts, substantially as specified.
