H. SMEAL. snow CASE.

ATHNT Prion.
HERMAN sMEAL, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOW- CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,791, dated April 2, 1895. l
Application filed January l2. 1 8 95.
To LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN SMEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show-Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention' relates to improvements in show cases, the object of the same being to provide a device of this character especially adapted for exhibiting cigars and other articles in the case.
The invention consists of a case having a pair of doors in the front thereof, hinged to suitable side bars and connected at their upper ends by pitmen which are in turn connected at their other ends to a bar adapted to slide in close contact with the top of the case, connected by a pitmau pivoted tol the end of a lever fulcrumed at a point near its center and moving in a horizontal slot through the back of the casing and near the upper end thereof.
It also consists of a pair of doors in the sides of the case having a platform secured to the lower sill thereof provided with a pin carrying an antifriction roller which pin is adapted to engage an elongated curved slot in a shelf which is secured to a rod or bar pivoted to the inside of the case, whereby upon opening or closing the side doors the said shelf is moved out or in to expose the articles carried by the shelf to View. The side doors are operated by means of a lever fulcrumed in the base of the case, moving in the slot in the back of the case and having a rod or bar connected to its inner end and to the shelf secured to the lower sill of the side door.
The invention also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. Y
I n the drawings forming a part of this speciiication: Figure 1 is a Vertical section of thev case showing the arrangement of levers, dac. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the same taken at a point near the bottom thereof.
Serial No. 534,646. (No model.)
Fig. 3 is a similar section taken at a point near the top.
Like reference-numeralsindicate like parts in the various views.
1 represents my case formed with a suitable base 2, back 3 and a top or cover 4L. Connecting the forward part of the base and cover are angularly disposed bars 5, 5, to which are hinged the front doors 6, 6, the same being of any suitable construction, but preferably having glass in the frame thereof. The upper ends of said doors 6 are connected by means of pitmen 7, 7, to a bar 8, pivoted at one end in the top of the casing and connected by means of a pitman 9 to a lever 10 fulcrumed at a point near its center and moving in an elongated horizontal slot 11 in the back of the casing near Vthe upper end thereof. By this construction it will be seen that the lever 10 will be operated to open or close the doors 6, 6, and when the latter are closed the said lever is flush with the back 8 of the casing and may be locked t0 said case in any suitable way.
Two upright bars 13, 13, extend from about the center of the bars 5, 5, down to the base 2 and horizontal bars 14, 14, extend from the same point to the back 3. Between the bars 13 and 14 and the back and base of the case the side doors l5, 15 are adapted to fit. The
'same are hinged to the back and have a platform 16 secured t0 the lower sill thereof, from which platform extends upwardly a pin 17 which carries an antifriction roller 18 thereon. On the inside of the horizontal bar 14 is secured a bracket 19 and in the said bracket and in the base 2 are pintles 20 of a rotating inwardly. The front of the article carried by said shelf is thereby always exposed toward the front of the case or toward the glass in the doors 15. Each of said doors is operated by means of a lever 24 pivoted at 25 to the ICO base 2 and movingr in a slot 2G in the back 3 of the case, so that when the said lever is in its closed position it Will rest flush with the back of the case. Each lever 24 has a laterally extending arm on its inner end, to which is pivoted a rod 27 which is in turn pivoted to the platform 16 of the doors l5. By this construction a movement of one of the levers 24 in one direction will open the door l5 to which itis connected and with it throw out the shelf 22 as just described. A reverse movement of said lever will close the door l5 and carry with it the shelf 22. When closed it may be locked in any suitable Way.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, andfdesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a show case having a pair of doors hinged to the front thereof and an elongated horizontal slot in its back near the top thereof, of a lever pivoted in the top of the frame and moving,r in said slot, a bar pivoted to one end of the top of said case, a pitman connecting said bar and one end of said lever, and pitmen connecting said har and the upper ends of said doors, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a show case, having doors pivoted in the side thereof, of a platform secured to the lower sill of said doors and provided with an upwardly extending pin, a shelf secured to a rod or shaft pivoted to the inside of said case and having an elongated curved slot therein which is engaged by said pin, a lever fulcrumed to the base of said case and moving in a slot in the back thereof, and a rod connected to the inner end of said lever and to the under side of said platform, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMAN SMEAL.
