' L. A. LIPMAN.
CARBON HOLDER FOR BLANK BOOKS.
No; 53 ,472. Patented Mar. 2 1895.
INVENTOI? ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS A. LIPMAN, OF NEW YORK, Y.
CARBON-HOLDER FQR BLANK-BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of. Letters Patent No. 536,472, dated March 26, 1895.
' A lication filed October 25,1894. s rain). 526,955. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS A. LIPMAN, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Carbon-Holder for Blank-Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
It is a common practice to use carbon sheets in connection with duplicate and triplicate blank books and particularly order books, and these carbon sheets frequently get lost or displaced, to the great inconvenience of the person using the book. A common practice is to hold the carbon sheets, which are usually folded, between the leaves of the books, in which case they are very likely to be lost, or else to provide a receptacle for the carbon sheets on the board cover of the blank book, but a great many fillers are used in connection with one pair of board covers, and the fillers are frequently used without the covers so that it often happens that the carbon sheets are not with the fillers or leaves of the blank book.
The object of my invention is to obviate these difficulties and produce a carbon holder which is of the greatest simplicity and cheap-v ness, which forms a part of the filler or body portion of the blank book, and which holds the carbon sheets securely in place, but permits the sheets to be conveniently removed when it is desired to use them.
To these ends my invention consists of a carbon holder for blank books, the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a blank book provided with my improved carbon holder, the book being thrown open to expose the holder andthe back of one of-the carbon sheets being broken away to expose the carbon; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the closed book and the carbon holder forming a part thereof.
The blank book 10 may be of any usual and tough back leaf 15 which is substantially of the same length as the other leaves of the blank book, and at its free edge or end the leaf 15 is provided with a tongue or flap 16 which is connected to the leaf by a binding or reinforcing strip 17, and the carbon sheets 18 which are of the usual kind are laid fiat on the leaf 15, the tongue or flap 16 is doubled over the ends of the sheets, as shown in Fig. 1, and the body portion of the book is then dropped down upon the flap or tongue, thus binding the carbon sheets in place. When desired, the carbon sheet 18 maybe provided with a protecting cover 18 of paper'as seen but this is not always essential. The carbon sheets are thus securely-held and can be easily removed and used in the ordinary way when desired.
It will be noticed that the carbon sheets may be very quickly placed in the holder or removed therefrom for use in the usual way, and it will also be observed that the blank book and holder may be used independently of any covers or in connection with any suitable binding, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A blank book having a cover and a thickened leaf at its back, said leaf being bound at one end in the book and having a greater length than the remaining leaves of the book, the opposite end of said leaf being folded over at a point corresponding with the edge of the book, and having its folded portion inclosed between its body and the adjacent leaf of the book, substantially as set forth.
