Be it known that I, ALLEN W. KUNCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kenton, in the county of Hardin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it apro pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in farm gates which can be opened in either di rection in the ordinary manner, for the passage of cattle or vehicles, and which can also be raised so as to allow stock, such as pigs and sheep, to pass underneath. The gate is also constructed with a sliding portion which 2o may be moved back and forth, forming an opening of greater or less extent, which will be found very useful in separating stock.

The :invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates the front gate post provided with a spring catch 2, and 3 the rear post. This post 3, on its inside, is provided with a vertical rib et to which are secured near 4o the top and bottom short vertical rods 5, the ends of which are bent at right angles and driven into the said rib, so that there will be a small space between said rods and rib. Secured to the intermediate rails 13, and end rails 12, are a series of short horizontal rails 15. By this construction aspace or opening is provided between the front end rails and intermediate rails for the passage of cattle or footmen. This opening is closed by a supplemental gate or slide consisting of vertical end rails 17, 17, embracing the horizontal rails to which are secured horizontal rails 18, which pass between the vertical intermediate rails 13. Both the main gate and slide are braced by diagonal brace bars 19.

Blocks 2O are interposed between the vertical rails of the gate and slide, and to two of these blocks at the rear end of the gate, are secured eyes 2l, which engage with the rods 5, which form the pivots of the gate.

Secured to an eye 23 at the rear end of thc gate is a rope 24:, which passes up around 7o pulley 8, and from thence it passes around a similar pulley 25, journaled in the upper ends of the rear vertical rails 12, to a lever 26, journaled in the intermediate vertical rails 13. This lever is provided with a hook 27, which is adapted to engage with a staple not shown on the upper horizontal rail 14,01. the gate and hold the lever in place.

A pivoted catch 28 is provided at the front end of the slide, which is adapted t0 engage 8c with a staple 29 on the frontend of the main gate, and lock the slide in place when closed.

One of the horizontal rails, marked 18a, of the supplemental gate or slide, is movable horizontally, and its front end is adapted to engage between the front vertical rails 12, where it is held in place by a removable pin 30. By this means the size of the openingin the gate may be varied as seen in dotted lines in Fig. l. By removing the pin and pushing 9o the rail 182t back, and then passing the pin through the holes 31, in the rails 17, the rail will move with the slide, whereas when said rail is connected with the rails 12, it will remain stationary, when the slide is moved back and forth. This rail 1S is also adapted to engage either with a mortise 18b in the front post 1, below the latch, so as to hold the gate when elevated, or with a mortise 18c below the latch to prevent stock from raising the gate when closed.

The operation is as follows: When it is desired to open the gate for the passage ot' vehicles, or otherwise, the spring-finger of catch 2, on that side of the gate at which it is to be opened, is pushed outwardly, so as to disengage it from the front of the gate. The latter can now be turned or swung on its pivots in the ordinary manner. To elevate the gate to allow hogs, sheep, and other small animals to pass underneath, the lever 26 is swung over to the right, which, through the medium of the rope secured thereto, and to the gate, will elevate the latter as seen in Fig. 2. To allow foot passengers to pass without opening the gate and also to provide a passage- Way for stock, when but a few are to be allowed to pass at a time, is the object ot the slide. To open this, the catch or hook is disengaged from the staple, and the slide pushed back, as seen in Fig. 1. In opening the gate,

it is best to push the slide back, as it relieves the rear post of a portion of the Weight.
