Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. WHITE- HEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked hereon, which form a part of this specificaion.

My present invention has reference to improvements in badges, and is more particularly designed to provide a badge, which may be reversed, comprising therein, in combination, with a doubled piece of ribbon of one color, or two pieces of ribbon of different colors or of the same color, any suitable form of head piece or finish at the top of the badge, and a clamping device at the lower portion or portions of said ribbon or ribbons, whereby the same badge may be worn for different purposes.

The invention is further designed to provide in connection with a-badge-ribbon, a novel form of clamping plate or bar, to be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed. Furthermore, another object of the invention is to provide in connection with said plate or clamping bar, a reversible medallion, bearing different inscriptions, de-y signs, or emblems, on its opposite sides, and lastly, a further object is to provide the necessary combinations for the accomplishment of these several objects.

The invention therefore consists in the general arrangement and combination of the several parts comprising the complete badge, to be hereinafter more particularly described and nally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying sheets of drawings, in which similar letters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

Fig. 3 isa vertical'section, in detail, of abadge, consisting of two ribbons of different colors, illustrating in connection therewith the construction of said clamping bar or plate, between the clamping sectionsof whichthelower ends of said ribbons are clamped, and the upper portions of said ribbons being formed with loops, whereby the badge can be detachably secured to a bar connected with the head piece. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section of said vclamping bar or plate, illustrating in connection therewith, a different manner of connecting the ribbon to said clamping bar, and. Fig. 5 is a similar view, illustrating a single ribbon secured to said clamping bar or plate. Fig. 7 is a front view of a badge, embodying the principles of my present i11- vention, illustrating in connection with the ribbon portion, a head piece, and at the bottom, my novel form of clamping plate or bar anda medallion connected therewith. Fig. 6 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 8 is a back View of said badge, illustrating the reversible feature of the same. Fig. 9 is a front view, on an enlarged scale,` of said clamping bar and medallion, attached to the ends of the ribbon of the badge. Fig. 10 is a vertical section, taken on line a: in Fig. 9, illustrating the general construction and arrangement of the parts comprising the badge, shown in Fig. 9, and Fig. 11 is a cross section taken on line y in said Fig. 9, clearly illustrating the arrangement of two medallions secured together by means of a suitable clamping ring. Fig. 12 is a view of the blank from which said clamping bar or plate is struck up before beingbent into shape ready to be secured between the two medallion disks illustrated in said Figs. 10 and 11. Fig. 13 is a perspective view of the clamping ring used for securing said medallion disks to the holding end of said clamping bar orplate, shown in said Fig. 12. Fig. 14 is a View of still another bar or plate of a slightly modified form of construction, provided with a holding portion for securing a medallion thereto.

In constructing badges, embodying my present invention and the improvements therein, l may take a single ribbon a, or two ribbons d and d of different colors or both of the same color, and sew the upper and hemmed over ends of said ribbons together, as shown in Fig. 3,110 form suitable loops 0,2, into either of which is passed the holding bar or pin b of a suitable head piece b, which is preferably provided with a second pin b2 or other suitable means for securing the badge to a garment. To the lower end-portion of said ribbon or ribbons is connected a suitable 1o clamping plate or bar c provided with any suitable ornamentation, and being of any suitable configuration in outline, thereby making a very pretty finish to the badge and preventing the curling up ofthe ends of the t5 ribbon or ribbons. Said plate or clamping bar c, as will be seen from Fig. l2, is made of sheet metal, having formed therein two openings c and c2 on opposite sides of a central bar c3. Said plate is formed with two oppositely arranged and ornamental clamping sections c4 and c5, which, when the said plate or bar c is bent into shape may be securely clamped together at their edges c6, as will be seen from Figs. 3, 4t and 5; or, said sections c4 and c5 may be provided with suitable holding lugs c7 and e8 to which a medallion d may be secured, as will be more fully described hereinafter. In order to secure said clamping plate or bar c to the ends a3 and a4 ot' the 3o ribbons a and c respectively, said ends are passed through the openings c' and c2 in such a manner as to bring them directly between the ornamental clamping sections c4 and c5,

as Will be clearly seen from Fig. 3, and when said sections are clamped together, as indicated, then said sections will be firmly pressed down against the said ends of the ribbons,

thereby securely holding the plate c in position and producing an ornamental finish to 4o the badge.

When only one ribbon is used, as in Fig. 4t, said ribbon may be passed directly through the oppositely arranged openings c and @2in said plate or bar c, substantially as shown in said ligure. In case of a single ribbon, the end is passed through said openings c and c2 and then sewed or glued fast to the back of the main portion of the ribbon, as clearly indicated in Fig. 5. As has been stated above,

5o said clamping sections c4 and c5 ofthe plate or bar o may be provided with suitable holding lugs c7 and as, which are preferably formed with the outwardly extending holding portions c, as will be seen more particularly from Fig. 12.

The medallion, which I prefer to use in connection with my novel form of clamping plate or bar c, consists essentially of two oppositely arranged frames or devices CZ and d2, each pro- 6o vided with a concave-convex back-plate d3, between which and the frame-portion of said device, is arranged a piece of silk, satin, paper or other suitable material bearing an inscription, design or emblem. Said device is preferably covered with a flexible and transparent medium, as Celluloid, which is securely clamped in place by the frame-portions and the marginal rim of the back-plate, as will be clearly understood. Of course, it will be evident, that the special arrangement and construction of the individual parts of these inscription, design or emblem-bearing frames or devices d. and d2,herein shown, are not essential and may be varied at will.

The novel feature of the medallion, is the arrangement of two oppositely placed concavo-convex, or otherwise shaped,frames or devices d and d2, of any desired construction, secured together by a clamping ring e, having two marginal clamping edges e and e2, which may be firmly clamped down against the edges of' said frames d and d2, as will be seen from Figs. l0 and ll. In order to secure said medallion to the clamping plate or bar c, said ring e is made with a cut-away portion e3, into which the two lugs c7 and o8 extend in such a manner, that their holding portions C9 project beneath the edges e4 and e5 at the opposite ends of said opening e3 in the ring e.

In the manufacture of the badge, illustrated in Figs. 6, 8, and 9, the ends of the tWo ribbons d and a are arranged between the two clamping sections c4 and c5 of the plate or bar c, as shown in Fig. l0. One ot said medallion frames, as d', is then placed in the ring e against the turned-over edge e thereof. The lugs c7 and a8 of the plate c are placed in the opening e3 of said ring e, causing the edges or holding portions e9 of said lugs to project beneath the edges e1 and e5 of said ring. Then a second medallion frame, as d2, is placed upon the first medallion frame, in the manner illustrated in Fig. ll,so that the lugs cT and cS will be between the backs of the tWo medallion frames or devices d and cl2, and finally, the clamping edge e2 of the ring c is Iirmly secured down, thereby making the complete badge illustrated in Figs. 6, 7, and S.

By the several arrangements and combinations of the parts comprising the badge herein shown and described, it will be seen that a badge is the result which may be used for different. purposes and on different occasions.

When it is desired to reverse the badge, all that is necessary is to remove the head piece b, by withdrawing the holding pin b from the loop a2 on the ribbon a and placing it in the loop of the ribbon a and the badge can be used on its reverse side for the desired purpose.

OE course it will be evident that certain changes may be made in the details of construction and combinations of parts, without departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact arrangement and combinations of parts herein shown, as for instance, I may dispense with the clamping section c5 of the plate or bar c, using in lieu thereof, the construction illustrated in Fig. 14, in which case the ribbon is passed through the opening c and the medallion is fastened to the holding portion c7 in the manner stated herein-above.

It will also be understood, that I do not in ICO tend to limit myself to the exact form and construction of reversible medallion herein shown and described, for I may use in connection with the plate or bar c, illustrated in Figs. l2 and 14, a medallion of any suitable construction, having an inscription, design or emblem on but one side thereof, as will be understood.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. A badge, comprising therein, a ribbon, means at the top of said ribbon for securing the badge to a garment, a clamping plate or bar c at the lower portion of said ribbon, consisting essentially of a pair of clamping sections adapted to be closed down upon each other, an opening in each section through which the lower portion of said ribbon is passed, and holding portions c7 and c8 on said clamping sections, and a medallion secured to said holdin g portions, said medallion comprising therein, two oppositely arranged inscription, design or emblem-bearing frames or devices d and d2, and a ring e provided with a cut-away portion e3 and clamping edges e and c2, for securing said frames or devices d and d2 together and in position on said holding portions c7 and cs, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The herein described reversible medallion d for a badge, consisting essentially of `two oppositely arranged inscription, design or emblem-bearing frames or devices d and d2, a ring e having a cut-away portion e3 and clamping edges, between which said trames or devices d and d2 are secured, and a clamping plate or bar c connected with said medallion cl for securing it to the end of a piece of ribbon of the badge, said plate or bar c comprising therein, two clamping sections having openings c and c2, and holding lugs c7 and o8 ext-ending into said cut-away portion e3 of the ring c, and between said frames or devices d and cl2 of the medallion, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. A reversible badge, comprising therein, two pieces of ribbon, means at the top of said ribbons for securing said badge to a garment, and a clamping plate or bar c, consisting essentially of a pair of clamping sections adapted to be closed down upon each other, an opening in each section,whereby the ends of said ribbons can be passed through said openings and clamped between said sections, holding portions c7 and as on said clamping sections, and a medallion secured to said holding portions, said medallion comprising therein, two oppositely arranged inscription, design or emblem-bearing frames or devices d and cl2, and a clamping ring e provided with a cut-away portion c3, and clamping edges e and e2, for securing said frames or devices ci and cl2 together and in position on said holding portions c7 and cs, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. In a badge, the combination, with the ribbon thereof, and means for securing the badge to a garment, ot a plate at the bottom of the ribbon having an opening therein, through which the lower portion of said ribbon is passed, a holding portion or lug c7 on said plate, and a medallion secured to said holding portion, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
