GEORGE SHEAR AND ANDREW W. QUINLAN, OF J OLIET, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,022, dated January 22, 1895.
Application filed October 1, 1894. Serial No. 524,569- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE SHEAR and ANDREW W. QUINLAN, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the adjustable table as it would appear standing on the floor ready for use. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of a portion of the table post, and a central Vertical section of a sliding collar thereon..
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the table post showing a face view of its ratchet teeth. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the table post, and a bottom plan view of one of the collars thereon. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a portion of the table post, and a central vertical section of a sliding collar thereon, being a reverse view of Fig. 2, showing the opposite sides of the ratchet teeth of the table post. Fig. 6 is a plan view of an arm and a section of a table board attached thereto, and showing an integral collar attached to said arm for adjustment on said table post and Fig. 7, is a cross sectional view of the table post.
This invention relates to certain improvements in adjustable tables which improvements are fully set forth and explained in the following specification and claim.
Referring to the drawings B represents the table post formed in cross section as shown in Fig. 7, and having its lower end secured in a bell shaped base K by means of a set screw, and provided its entire length with downwardly projecting ratchet teeth formed so that one edge of the face T is higher than its opposite edge V as shown in Figs. 3 and 5.
D is a collar adapted to slide on the table post B, and is provided on its upper end with teeth for fitting the spaces between the teeth of another collar 0 above and designed to rest on collar D. 7
The collar D is provided on its inner wall with a conical shaped lug W having its face grooved to fit the beveled face of the teeth of the post B. The teeth on the post B, and the lug W are for the purpose of giving adjustment-to the collar D anywhere along on said post to regulate the height of the tables that through the medium of its collar 0 rests on collar D. To regulate or adjust the collarD along on said post, looking at Figs. 2 and 5, it is intended to grasp the collar D and move it up so its lug W is free from the ratchet tooth on which it rests, when the collar is par tially rotated so its said lug will be in the channel Y of the said post, and extending alongits entire length. It may then be moved either up or down, and then partially rotated back to its first position so its lugWwill rest upon the face of one of said ratchet teeth and thus support said collar at such place, so that no set screw is needed to hold said collar at any desired place. The form of the ratchet tooth face and of the said lug Wprevents rotation of said collar while it is adjusted as shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
X is an arm having a dovetail groove its entire length for receiving one end of the table board A as shown in Figs. 1 and 6. Said arm is provided with an integral collar C having both ends toothed to fit the teeth on the upper end of the collar D, as said collar 0 is placed on the post B as shown in Fig. 1. The said table board may be turned to extend in any desired direction simply by raising collar 0 so its teeth are free from those of collar D, and when the table is in the position desired, may be maintained in such position by simply letting collar 0 down so its teeth will fit the spaces between the teeth of collar D as shown.
Z is a cap fitted to the top of the post B and provided with a shelf F adapted to hold articles, and is provided with pins G for holding spools, and said cap is also provided with an arm or hook H upon which to hang any article desired.
Having thus described our invention, what 5 we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
In an adjustable table the combination of the post B having the series of downwardly projecting bevel faced ratchet teeth, and havtoo ing the longitudinal groove Y, the base K E, and the cap having the shelf F and arm 11 for supporting said post, the collar D having all arranged to operate substantially as and to its lug W on its inner Wall and formed to fit for the purpose set forth.
the bevel face of said ratchet teeth, and hav- GEORGE SHEAR.
5 ing its upper end fitted with teeth, the collar ANDREW W. QUINLAN. 0 having its ends toothed and having the in Witnesses: tegral arm X having a longitudinal groove, THOS. H. HUTCHINS,
table board A, fitting said groove, bracket J, RAY l-IUTOHINS.
