Description

UNITED STATES f PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD; H. RYAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PENCIL-CASE.
sPEcIFtcATIoN forming' part of Letter Patent No. 531,135, dated December 1s, 1894.
t Application mea May 5,1894. sesamo. 510,174. maman.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD H. RYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Brook-V lyn, in the county of Kings andState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Pencil-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to` pencil cases, and consists in a novel construction of the same 'as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings-Figurel is a side elevation of my improved pencil, opened ready for use; Fig. 2, a side elevation, with the case in section, with'the parts in their closed po# sition Fig. 3, a view showing the slotted tubes and attendant parts removed from the shell or casing,-the outer slotted tube being shown in section, and Fig. 4, a longitudinal sectional view of the complete device in its open position. j
A indicates a tube provided with a straight longitudinal slot a which terminates at the ends with offsets b, as shown in Fig. 3; and
c and d indicate, respectively, a collar anda sleeve rigidly alxed to the ends of said tube. The collar c encircles and fits upon the tube, while the sleeve d is of larger diameter than the tube, and projects from and beyond the end of the latter, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. Mounted upon the tube A between the sleeve and collar, is a second tube B, which is provided with two spiral slots, e and f, which extend in reverse directions from near the center to the ends of said tube B, as shown in Fig. 2, the said slot e beinglonger and having a greater pitch than the slot f.
Working within the lower (left-hand) end of tube A is a pencil carrier or holder C, which is provided with a pin or stud g, Figs. 2, 3 and 4, to project through the slots a and -e formed in the tubes A and B. At the opthe collar c and sleeve d, and supported at connected with this ring t', which is in turn connected with tube B; but section F, which is merely supported by the ring, is soldered or otherwise connected to the ltube A or its collar c. Thus section F is connected with tube A, and section G with tube B. Now by holding section F of the shell or casing, and turning the other section, G, the spirally-slotted tube will be turned or rotated, and the pins or studs g h will be moved along the lougitudinal slota in opposite directions until they reach the ends thereof. YWhenl they reach this point, which limits or determines the distance the pencil and eraser shall be projected beyond the shell or case, the pins will be carried into the osets or lateral portions b, whereby the pencil and the eraser are prevented from being pushed into the case by pressure upon their ends, as when in use.
.By a reversemovement or rotation of section G, the pins g h will first be carried out of the offsets b and into the main slot a, and then, with the holding devices Vor carriers from which theyproject, moved inward toward the center of the tube A. It is of course immaterial whether the section F or the section G be held against turning, or whether they be turned simultaneouslyin opposite directions,
the result being the same, except that in the latter case the pencil and eraser will be projected or Withdrawn more rapidly than when only one of the sections is turned.
It is of course obvious that in lieu of a pencil, a pen, tooth-pick, butto1i-hook, or most any other suitable device may be used; but the present construction was designed with special reference to lead pencils, and to the use of long leads therein. I'
The rubber eraser is short and needs only to be carried far enough into the sleeve d to keep it from getting dirty, and for this reason the upper section of thev pencil is made .v shorter than the lower section, and the spiral slot f given a smaller throw than the slot e.
Having thus described my invention, what IOO slotted tube A, provided with collar c and sleeve or extension d; the tube B provided with reverse slots e end f; e ring fsecured to tube B; carriers C D provided respectively 5 with pins g h to work in the slots; and the two-part shell or easing F G connected with the tubes A and B.
In Witness whereof I hereunto seb my bend m the presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD H. RYAN.
