No. 539.766. Patented Dec. 11, 1894.
1 ,1 .I all, 7 I m illillllll u Nrrn; terns JAMES MONROE GASTON, OF LOUI Sh'ILLE, KENTUCKY.
BOLT AND NUT, LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 530,766, dated December 1 1, 1894.
Application filed April 18, 1894. I
To all whom it may concern.-
lie it known that I, JAMES MONROE GASTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ke ntucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holt and Nut Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this-specification.
. Figure 1 of the drawings isa representation of a side elevation of the invention applied.
, Fig.2 is a front view of same with the lockof the nut.

Thisinvention has relation to certain new and useful improvements incombined bolts, nuts, and nut-locks, the object being to pro vide a threadless bolt and not of simple and practical character, and so constructed as to enable the parts to be readily and quickly applied and adjusted.
With this object in view, the invention consists in the 'novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims Referring to the accompanying drawings,
I it will appear that the invention comprises three part-s,--a rod or bolt A, a nut B, and a locking device 0, all constructed and combined in the mannernow to be described.
The bolt or rod A at that end portion which is to receive. the-nut, is of reduced diameter, forming at .a an inwardly .otfset shoulder against which the nut seats. A is a series of segmental, longitudinal parallel ribs, formed upon the said reduced portion, said ribs-havingat their inner endsthe square shoulders c, which'are separated from the shoulder a by'a spaceequal to the thickness "of the nut, said shoulders c forming the outer bearing seat for the nut.
The nut 13' has ofiset from its circular unthreaded bolt opening a series of parallel V groove Btc'orrespon'ding inform, number, and

location to the ribs A of the bolt, the metal portions D between said grooves forming ribs corresponding to-the spaces or grooves D between the-ribs A. The inner face of the nut is beveled or wedge-shaped, and has at its thickest edge a depending guide rib or flange E, said'flange or rib having'cut therein two oblique and converging grooves e, e, for the locking device, 0. Said locki-ng' device comprises a wedge-shaped flat piece of metal,
. of a width about equal to that of the nut, and
thickened or flanged at one end 0', and cut away or slotted at its opposite end portion to embrace the bolt, forming two legsor prongs To receive the locking device, the bolt or rod A is flattened ed as at f, upon opposite sides, forming shoulders ,1, between which and to bring-the ribs and grooves of the two parts out of alignment. The locking device is then placed between the wedge-shaped face of the nut and the shouldersfif, and is driven in tight, thus securely and rigidly looking the parts, the legs or prongs F, F, entering the oblique converging grooves e, e, which causes the said prongs to converge, the metal from which the lockingdevice is made, being sutiiciently malleable for this purpose. If wash-- ers are necessary, they may be placed between theshoulders g and the locking device, as at K. I
'To remove the nut, a cold chisel or other tool may be driven between the nut and the rib or flange C of the locking device.
This bblt may be used for securing fish plates, and-in other places where the ordinary bolt is usually employed.
Having thus described my invention,-what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein described threadless bolt and nut, comprising the rod or bolt having an unwhich seats thereon, substantially as speci threaded reduced portion at one end forming ashoulder against which the inner face of the nut seats,"a series of parallel ribs on said reduced portion separated from each other by grooves or spaces, and having shoulders at their inner ends which form the outer bear a ing for the nut, a nut having an unthreaded opening forsaid bolt and having oilfset grooves corresponding in form to the ribs on the bolt,
3. A tbreadless bolt having thereon a series of parallel segmental ribs A, a shoulderva, and a nut seat between said shoulder a and thesaid ribs, in combination with a nut having grooves offset from its opening, said not having a, beveled inner face, and a locking device seatingbetween said beveled face and shoulders on the said boll, Substantially as specified. v l 4. In a threadless bolt and nut device, the nu'thavt'ng an nnthreaded bolt opening there through, a series of segmental grooves offset from the inner circu mference-of said opening, said grooves extending parallel with theaxis of said opening, the inner face of said not being beveled, and a rib or flange upon said beveled face, notched to receive a locking device, substantially as specified.
5. The combination with the threadless bolt A, having the shoulder a, the parallel. segmental ribs A, separated by grooves, and a nut seat between the shoulder'd and the inner ends of said ribs, of the not having the unthreaded bolt opening, the parallel grooves offset from said opening, and corresponding to the. sai'd'ribs' A of the bolt, the ribs be tween said grooves corresponding to the grooves between the ribs A, the beveled inner face, and'the rib'on said face having the oblique converging notches therein, and a locking device slotted at one end portion to receive the bolt and having prongs at each side of the slot arranged to engage the said gorverging notches, substantially as speci 6. In combination, an nnthreaded bolt having a nut seat thereon, and aseries of paral ,lel ribs,-a.nut having a series of grooves to pass said ribs, and a beveled inner face formed with a notched, rib, and a locking device having a wedge snrface-fpr engagement with the beveled face of the nut, and prongs r JAMES mosses s-As'ron.
