RoBERrL. BOYD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SELF-BINDING. BLOTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 529,892, dated November 27, 1 894.
A plication filed August 9,1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. BOYD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New :York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain Self-Binding Blotter, of wh1ch the following is a specification. My lnvention relates to blotting pads and in particular to an appliance whereby the sheets of blotting paper may be engaged with and detached from the same at will, and it has for its object the provision of a device, neatand ornamental in appearance, simple and Inexpensive in construction, and efficient 1n practical use. r
To attain the desired end my invention conslsts in the construction and arrangement of parts first shown and described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings which form a part of this spec1tication Figure 1, represents a plan or top view of my blotter. Fig. 2, is a view of the back or under side of the same. Fig. 3, 1s a section on the line 3, 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a v1ew in section, and Fig. 5, a plan view of other blotters constructed according to my invention.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views.
Referring again to the drawings, A, denotes a sheet of transparent or translucent material, as of celluloid, constituting a face for, and ordinarily secured, as by means of fastoning devices a to a suitable supporting body, frame or backing, as the preferably flexible card board sheet or tablet B. At ord1narily one'end of the supporting sheet B, I prov1de the said fasteners as, with a holding or engaging device, as an offset formed by washers a a Fig. 3, constituting practically a flange extending from the shank of the fastener a; or consisting of a head a, Fig. 4,10- cated at the extremity of the shank extending from the shoulder a, of the fastener a. An equivalent engaging means is denoted by the eyelets (2.5, Fig. 5. The sheets of the-blotting paper 0, are also provided, preferably at one extremity of the same, with engaging devices, as the orifices or recesses 0 constructed and arranged to become interlocked with the holding means with which the back B, is provided.
In the present instance by simply bending the Serial No. 482,787. (No model.)
sented in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, in order that the bottom or lower face of my appliance, or blotter proper may present a neat and symmetrical appearance.
After being used for a period, the blotter C, may be detached from the supporting back B, and inserted in the same again in a reversed position or, if preferred, a new sheet of blotting paper may be engaged with the said supporting back.
Other suitable rigid or movable holding devices may be substituted for those shown and described.
It is manifest that the sheet B, may be suitably ornamented, and also that the transparent or translucent material A, may be dispensed with if so desired. I
It is evident that many slight changes in the construction and relative arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V 1. A self binding flexible blotting pad consisting of a supporting back and translucent face secured together by engaging means consisting of perpendicular pins provided with heads, in combination with a sheet of resilient blotting paper also provided with engaging means consisting of recesses formed in the sides of the same, and constructed and arranged to be sprung into lateral interlocking engagement with and detached from the said support at will, and to be retained in said normal position solely by means of the resilience of the edges of said lateral recesses.
2. A self binding flexible blotting pad consisting of a supporting back provided with engaging means consisting of perpendicular pins provided with beads, in combination with asheet of resilient blotting paper, longer than the said back, one end of which paper is constructed and arranged to.be folded over upon itself, and is provided with engaging means consisting of recesses formed in the sides of In testimony of the foregoing specification IO the same and constructed and arranged to be I do hereby sign the same, in the city of New sprung into lateral interlocking engagement York, county and State of New York, this 24th with and detached from the said support at day of March, A. D. 1893.
wil and to be retained in said normal position solely by means of the resilience of the ROBERT BOYD edges of said lateral recesses; the faces of the Witnesses:
blotting paper and supporting back being J. ODELL FOWLER, J r.,
made tomutually conform. WM. M. V. FOWLER.
