CLOTH-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,109, dated October 9, 1894.

Be it known that I, 'WILLIAM H. CUMMINGS, of Utica, in the county of Oneida, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cloth-Holders, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to cloth holders.

My object is to produce a cloth holder for temporarily holding pieces of cloth while they are being marked, and subsequently while being cut. I

It has been customary heretofore to hold the cloth by placing the layers of cloth upon the table and laying over them a heavy weight upon one end so as to keep the several layers from slippingor sliding; but this method has been unsatisfactory, for the reason that, in cutting anumber of layers of cloth, some of the underlying pieces are apt to get out of place so that when the cutting is done, according to the marking upon the upper piece, it is not properly out; and to the end of obviating this difficulty, my invention consists in the several novel features and combination of parts hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed.

It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which Figure 1, is a top plan view of the device, complete. Fig. 2, is a front view of a portion thereof, showing means for securing it to the table. Fig. 3, is an under plan view in detail of the upper section of the clamp. Fig. 4:, is an end view of the device, complete, showing in dotted lines the cloth held by the clamp, the clamp being secured to the table, the table being broken away. Fig. 5, is a similar view, with the clamping arm raised, the cloth being removed.

A is a base piece having its front edge beveled substantially as shown in the drawings, and provided with teeth a.and having uprights 13- upon its rear edge, to which uprights is pivoted the upper member of the clamp O. The upper member of the clamp C- comprises arms ewhich are pivoted to the uprights a short distance from their rear ends, as shown at b in the drawings, and a front bar d. The clamp C is also provided on its front edge with a ing or handle -cby which it is easily and conveniently raised, and the lower face of the -'E are brackets to which the two members of the clamping device are secured, and is provided with a forwardly extending arm -F/ which is vertically perforated and threaded,'adapted to receive a thumb-screw F for the purpose of securing the clamping device to a table or in any other convenient place.

It will be observed that when the upper member of the clamp C- is raised, as shown in Fig. 5, the tension produced by the spring arm -D-- and the rear end of the-arm eis sufficient to hold it in its raised position, and when it is depressed so as to come in contact with the cloth, the spring arm D exertsan influence to force the rear endof the arm e upward, thereby holding the front end down in engagement with the cloth.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g f l. A cloth holder comprising a base, uprights secured thereto, and the upper clamping member pivoted to said uprights and provided with rearwardly extending arms, spring arms D- secured to said base and engaging with the rearwardly extending arms, and means for securing the holder to the table.

A cloth holder comprising a base, uprights secured thereto, the upper clamping member pivoted to said uprights, provided with rearwardly extending arms, spring arms D secured to said base, anti-friction rollers secured to the rear end of the rearwardly projecting arms of the upper clampingmemher and engaging with said spring arms, substantially as described for the purposes set forth.
